Gilgamesh was an early bronze age king of Uruk, an ancient city near the mouth of the Euphrates. His encounter with his forefather Utnapishtim, who was said to have been immortal, lays the foundation of religions for times to come. Religious Studies
The objectives of the religious studies major are best attained in the context of a liberal arts education. The curriculum helps students develop the capacity for scholarship and disciplined thought on the subject of religion. But more than this, our program encourages students to utilize the study of religion as a means for enriching their own quest for meaning, the consideration of values, and pondering the questions that have captivated religious people across the millennia. The program avoids dogmatism as well as unquestioning faith or belief. We approach this area of human inquiry with the same objectivity demanded elsewhere in the humanities. We require fairness with regard to evidence, respect for reasonable differences in points of view, and the avoidance of any attempts to proselytize. Religious studies provides an exceptional vehicle for exploring differences in culture, values, and world-view. The religious studies curriculum encourages the appreciation of cultural diversity as we consider traditional values, sacred texts, and religious history. We facilitate travel abroad (e.g., to India and China), and offer many opportunities for direct encounter with religious communities local to Northern California. We seek to encourage dialogue and mutual understanding among different religions as an antidote to the mistrust and misunderstanding that is so common in the world today. We especially welcome and encourage students from under-represented groups to become majors.

The department is home to a dozen regular faculty, with strengths especially in the study of Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, and Islam; it enrolls about thirty graduate students and roughly as many undergraduate major and minors. Religious Studies works closely with several related programs at Stanford: the Department of Philosophy, with which we share staff and offer a joint undergraduate major; the Ho Center for Buddhist Studies, with which we share Building 70 on the Main Quad; the Taube Center for Jewish Studies, the Abbasi Program in Islamic Studies; the Program in Medieval Studies; and the McCoy Family Center for Ethics in Society. Religious Studies
At Mercyhurst, the academic study of religion is an important discipline within the overall humanities curriculum. Religious experience and inquiry are taken seriously in the Mercy educational tradition because they are integral to the human quest for meaning and value. The religious studies department respects the religious freedom of its students who are encouraged to think creatively and critically about religious and theological questions. The spirit of ecumenical and interfaith openness is a characteristic of both Mercyhurst College and the religious studies department. The college affirms its Roman Catholic heritage and identity while honoring and studying other religious traditions. The department also fosters awareness of justice issues that emerge within religious traditions and our global society. Search Sitemap
