The student is also encouraged to engage in independent study and must participate in a research seminar. The course of study provides a solid grounding not only for those who wish to pursue graduate academic and pastoral studies in the field, but also for those who intend to have careers in religious education and in church ministry. The academic minor augments the background of students whose major programs are in the social and natural sciences and complements those of students whose concentrations are from within the Humanities and Fine Arts areas. The minor in liturgical studies features the distinctive component of a supervised internship in a local parish.

As one of the billions who watched the Chilean miners being brought to the surface from a subterranean tomb, I listened as journalists warned of awful physical and mental breakdowns that could occur at any moment. Horrors were afoot, and teams of specialists were on hand, as they would surely be needed. But one by one, as the men emerged from an ordeal that was feared to drive them mad, the reality proved quite different. There were no panic attacks among the miners. There was no hysteria. Not one heart palpitated into apoplexy.... Click Here for More

We do not interpret church relationship to mean that the Department of Religious Studies serves a catechetical function, inculcating certain denominational views and combating others. Rather, we view education as exposure to a variety of viewpoints and options. The range of viewpoints represented in class lectures and discussions promotes mutual understanding and an awareness of the importance of religion in cultures and in individual lives. Religious Studies is the secular study of religion and religious practices, beliefs, and histories. Comparative aspects of various religions and relative sociological influences are also involved in Religious Studies, but specialized focus is usually involved in the form of degree study paths or tracks. A degree in religion can lead to a number of different career paths. Some use this knowledge in their professional career by becoming pastors or other ministry workers. A degree in religion can also be a starting point for graduate school in a number of fields, such as medicine, law, and philosophy. ( More about Religious Studies
