Religious Studies
Program Overview
Because Religious Studies is interdisciplinary and multicultural, it is an excellent degree to complement many other majors. Double majors are easily accommodated within a well-designed four-year course of study, since the Religious Studies major has only a 36-unit requirement. Graduates from the program have had double majors with Psychology, Biology, History, Communications, and other fields where the study of religion enhances or focuses the second major. The minor in religious studies consists of a minimum of 15 units to include at least three lower division units in religious studies and 12 units selected from any of the four areas of study. The minor is a less ambitious way to combine your major interests with the academic study of religion. Anyone who is interested in the beliefs, behavior, and values of other people would benefit from a minor in religious studies.
Career Outlook
Religious Studies prepares students for any career that requires critical thinking, analysis, oral and written communication skills, and the ability to reflect on questions of meaning and value. The study of religion is excellent pre-professional preparation for fields such as law, teaching, medicine, counseling, social work, conflict resolution, international business, foreign service, journalism, various ministries and other careers in non-profit organizations and public service.

AN OVERVIEW FOR STUDENTS
NC State courses in Religious Studies provide students with the opportunity to study the history, texts, and practices of well-known religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, for example), as well as those which are lesser known (e.g., Vodou or Wicca). Our faculty strive to help students develop a variety of methods for understanding and interpreting these traditions, focusing on historical studies (the narrative of a particular tradition or geographic territory), textual studies (oriented towards a particular body of sacred texts or towards a specific theme), and critical/theoretical studies (which investigate broad comparative or analytical questions on, for example, the meanings of ritual, the role of gender, or the relationship between politics and religions). Students are trained to interpret and evaluate these elements of religious traditions, and to think critically, constructively and independently about important issues like the comparison of religious traditions, the relationship between beliefs and practices, the justification of religious beliefs, the interpretation of sacred texts, religious ethics, and the role and impact of religions in modern societies.

Welcome
Why are students turning to the study of religion in record numbers? And why are they choosing to come to University of Wales Trinity Saint David? Because one cannot truly understand the world without understanding the religious traditions that have shaped it and continue to act upon it - for good or ill - as powerful forces today. We hope you will consider joining us on this quest. "...when historians look back on his century, they will probably see religion as the prime animating and destructive force in human affairs, guiding attitudes to political liberty and obligation, concepts of nationhood and, of course, conflicts and wars. Culture and Religion is an interdisciplinary journal seeking an engagement between scholars working across a range of disciplinary fields, including anthropology, cultural studies, critical theory and gender studies, and postcolonial studies. Lying at the interface between the study of religion and other academic studies of culture, Culture and Religion is a forum for exploring the perspectives of both anthropology and cultural studies. In particular, the journal will consider why cultural studies have hitherto neglected the significance of religious manifestations in cross-cultural perspectives, and define ways in which the discipline of religious studies needs to engage with other areas of contemporary critical, cultural, and anthropological theory. The principal aim of Culture and Religion is to promote critical investigation into all aspects of the study of religion and culture, particularly from scholars with an innovative and multidisciplinary focus.

The department of religious studies at Holy Cross addresses religion as a fundamental dimension of human history and personal experience. Recognizing that students are in a process of coming to terms with their own traditions and personal spiritualities, it offers courses that systematically explore a wide range of theological perspectives and ethical questions that are central in the formation of a personal religious identity. Since a majority of our students come from a Roman Catholic background, the department offers many courses that analyze its biblical foundations and situate it within its broader cultural and historical contexts. In view of the global connections that have and will increasingly affect students, the department equally offers courses on the full range of world religions, including Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, East Asian religions, and modern religious movements. Tutorial reading programs and individual research projects are available to qualified students. Directions Contact Us Employment Campus Directory ... Privacy

Research paper on Andre Padoux s writings on Tantras from the Department of Religious studies.
http://www.colorado.edu/ReligiousStudies/TheStrip/features/thesis/academics/pado
In the history of Western representations of Hindu Tantra the writings of Andre Padoux are a watershed mark signifying the coming of age of the discourse. His writing have finally sloughed off the negative and simplistic views of Hindu tantra. His work opens an enormous corpus of writings to the West. Where before Woodroffe's translations, drawn haphazardly from many divergent and conflicting sectarian groups, were virtually the only viable representations available to the West, Padoux has interjected a prolific set of texts and interpretations into our discussions. His work is drawn primarily from 'High Hindu tantra' sources from the Kashmir Shaivite traditions, particularly the systematizing work of Abhinavagupta. His selection of this highly intellectual version of Hindu Tantra is extremely significant as it sets the tone for what is being discussed by contemporary academics.
