Last Reviewed on 10/22/09 Sociology is the study of social groups, institutional structures, and social interaction. It deals with the contexts of human action: systems of beliefs and values, the patterns to which social relations conform, and the processes whereby social institutions are created, maintained, and transformed. Sociology combines the elements of a search for social order with a vision of a just, free, and egalitarian society - a vision that may require fundamental social change. Developing an understanding of this double aspect of the sociological tradition, the interrelationship between social order and social change, is one of the teaching goals of sociologists at Santa Cruz. An equally important and necessarily implicated aim is the development of an appreciation for disciplined inquiry, observation, and research.

There are two beings in him: an individual being which has its foundation in the organism and the circle of whose activities is therefore strictly limited, and a social being which represents the highest reality in the intellectual and moral order that we can know by observation-I mean society. This duality of our nature has as its consequence in the practical order, the irreducibility of a moral ideal to a utilitarian motive, and in the order of thought, the irreducibility of reason to individual experience. In so far as he belongs to society, the individual transcends himself, both when he thinks and when he acts." - Emile Durkheim. What is Sociology?
Sociology is the study of social groups, and how social groups influence - and are influenced by - the people who live within them. In many ways, society is like a puzzle - at first all the pieces seem completely separate and the picture is disjointed. Then with some study, connections between pieces become clear and the overall picture emerges. Sociology is the study of how the different pieces of society fit together. Some specific sociological questions include:
  • Why is there inequality in the world? Is the deaf community an ethnic community?

Sociology
What this handout is about
This handout introduces you to the wonderful world of writing sociology. Before you can write a clear and coherent sociology paper, you need a firm understanding of the assumptions and expectations of the discipline. You need to know your audience, the way they view the world and how they order and evaluate information. So, without further ado, let's figure out just what sociology is, and how one goes about writing it.
What is sociology, and what do sociologists write about?
So, just what is a sociological perspective? At its most basic, sociology is an attempt to understand and explain the way that individuals and groups interact within a society. How exactly does one approach this goal? C. Wright Mills, in his book The Sociological Imagination (1959), writes that "neither the life of an individual nor the history of a society can be understood without understanding both." Why? Well, as Karl Marx observes at the beginning of

see Interactionism Sociology and Society The first book in the series is Understanding Everyday Life The second book, Social Differences and Divisions Social Change The last book in the series, The Uses of Sociology , discusses the various ways in which sociology is practised and the consequences of sociological activity for public affairs. It explores the main debates in sociology concerning its social purposes. Comparing and contrasting different sociological traditions in sociological thought, it examines a variety of their engagements with 'the social'. The relevance of sociological knowledge is considered in relation to government, the public sphere (including the media), economic life, social movements, 'race' and ethnicity. The book also considers related questions, such as whether sociology is a science or a cultural endeavor, and whether sociological research and analysis can be detached and unbiased. Finally, it considers different views of what Max Weber called the 'vocation' of sociology, and asks whether sociologists have taken the role of prophets criticizing present social arrangements and envisaging possible future developments. The Blackwell Dictionary of Sociology or The Penguin Dictionary of Sociology . The overall approach taken is interactive, and we hope general readers will use the activities and the questions based on the readings in order to engage actively with the texts

Welcome to the UNC-CH Department of Sociology
by admin-oasis last modified Founded in 1920 by Howard W. Odum, our department has played a prominent role in the development of sociology as a major field of study in the social sciences. Several years after founding the department, Odum also founded Social Forces , a journal that continues to play a leading role in the dissemination of groundbreaking social research. Since the 1930s, when we were judged "distinguished" by the American Council of Education, we have been regarded as among the most productive, innovative, and respected sociology departments in the United States. Current and past faculty members have been important figures in regional, national, and international social science, including Peter Blau, Hubert Blalock, Glen Elder, Amos Hawley, Gerhard Lenski, and Tony Oberschall. Seven former members of our department and alumni have served as presidents of the American Sociological Association, including Arne Kalleberg, who was ASA president in 2007-8. We invite you to explore the department through the website. Please direct any questions to

Quotes
"We may begin by noting that sociologists increasingly fail to ask what is worth knowing and what is not (Moore 1998). Instead they either plunge headlong into highly specialized and methodologically sophisticated investigations of matters of moderate significance or pursue zealously and with an apparently satisfying sense of resentment the political-ideological issues bequeathed to us by the 1960s." ~ Paul Hollander "Sociology threatens to join phrenology as a pseudo science and to share the fate of the occult studies in being viewed more as a privileged language of dedicated elites than as a field of investigation broadly reflective of public needs." ~ Irving Horowitz "A quite probable future for sociology is gentle decline into an atmosphere of nostalgia. As the realm of "the market" expands, the realm of the "social" shrinks." ~ R.W. Connell "In fact, for various reasons, academic sociology has largely been transformed from the applied science envisioned by the founders into what is essentially a literary pursuit. The journal article, especially, has become the essential product of one's labors, and with good reason. For it is the article, and the article alone, that, if published in the right place, can secure a good job, win tenure, ensure promotion, and if widely cited gain one a sort of immortality (or at least 15 minutes of fame). ~ Jay Weinstein "The early years were shaped by Christian projects of social reform, the settlement house movement, and other currents in the development of social-welfare institutions; efforts to integrate and provide what we would now call social capital to both African-Americans and immigrants; and concern for the depopulation of rural America and the problems of urbanization." ~ Craig Calhoun and Troy Duster

Auguste Comte ) was first to use the term . The problems caused by the change to an industrial society, where many people moved to cities and worked in factories, was an early focus of sociology. Karl Marx Max Weber and Émile Durkheim were leading figures in the study of social phenomena. Themes included: community authority status , “alienation” ( isolation ) and lack of power. In the 2000s, sociology looks at such things as: race ethnicity class gender , the family and social interaction . It also studies the breakdown of social structures crime and divorce . Sociology can also be looked at as the study of the worldwide society. A society is the community of people living in a particular country or region and having shared customs, laws, and organizations.
