There is particular emphasis on the recurring role of religion in all societies and throughout recorded history. The sociology of religion is distinguished from the philosophy of religion in that it does not set out to assess the validity of religious beliefs, though the process of comparing multiple conflicting dogmas may require what Peter L. Berger has described as inherent "methodological atheism". Whereas the sociology of religion broadly differs to theology in assuming the invalidity of the supernatural, theorists tend to acknowledge socio-cultural reification of religious practise.

Sociology is a science dedicated to understanding the social universe, from the micro-dynamics of human emotions to the larger processes involved in the creation of social institutions, corporate organizations, and global social structures. To give Sociology majors a firm understanding of the field, the UCR department of sociology offers courses covering a broad spectrum of topics including; ethnicity, race and class inequality, gender, social stratification, sociology of education, the city and urban problems, the environment, sociology of religion, crime and deviance and global social change. Course topics also include sociology of human and primate societies, formal and large organizations, the family, political organizations, language diversity in the United States, evolutionary sociology and social psychology. The Sociology undergraduate program has two major goals: to promote undergraduate excellence and to advance career success for students after graduation. To this end, Department staff and faculty provide students with individual attention and guidance. In addition, structured and diversified courses foster analytical and critical thinking. The Department is known for outstanding teaching evaluations, research, and for the commitment of its full professors to teaching lower division courses in social problems, inequality in American society, the city and especially the introduction to sociology.

Home Library French Literature Companion The study of human society (or societies) is as old as civilization, but the modern discipline of sociology is generally traced to French thinkers of the 18th and 19th c. From them arose three broad currents of sociological thought. Montesquieu's heroic attempt to codify the principles of different social formations was an application of the rationalist project of the Enlightenment . His primary interest was in political structures and in their legal and philosophical underpinnings, an approach taken up by Tocqueville in his influential studies of 18th-c. France and 19th-c. America. Together they dominate the current of liberal sociology, whose most recent exponents have included Élie Halévy and Raymond Aron Henri de Saint-Simon was a fertile source of proposals on social organization and planning, particularly in respect of key social élites. Many of his ideas were systematized by Comte , who attempted to extend the methods of the natural sciences to society, and coined the term ‘sociology’. His positivist methodology and emphasis on empirical enquiry were developed by Frédéric Le Play (1806-82), especially in his study of the family, and by Émile

Sociology
Sociology, the scientific study of human social behavior. As the study of humans in their collective aspect, sociology is concerned with all group activities: economic, social, political, and religious. Sociologists study such areas as bureaucracy, community, deviant behavior, family, public opinion, social change, social mobility, social stratification, and such specific problems as crime, divorce, child abuse, and substance addiction. Sociology tries to determine the laws governing human behavior in social contexts.

30. Sociology - Crystalinks
sociology is the science or study of the origin, development, organization, and functioning of human society; the science of the fundamental laws of social relationships
http://www.crystalinks.com/sociology.html
Sociology is the science or study of the origin, development, organization, and functioning of human society; the science of the fundamental laws of social relationships, institutions, etc. It generally concerns itself with the social rules and processes that bind and separate people not only as individuals, but as members of associations, groups, and institutions, and includes the examination of the organization and development of human social life. The sociological field of interest ranges from the analysis of short contacts between anonymous individuals on the street to the study of global social processes. Most sociologists work in one or more specialties or subfields. The meaning of the word comes from the suffix "-logy" which means "study of," derived from Greek, and the stem "socio-" which is from the Latin word socius, meaning member, friend, or ally, thus referring to people in general. It is a social science involving the study of the social lives of people, groups, and societies, sometimes defined as the study of social interactions. It is a relatively new academic discipline which evolved in the early 19th century. Because sociology is such a broad discipline, it can be difficult to define, even for professional sociologists. One useful way to describe the discipline is as a cluster of sub-fields that examine different dimensions of society. For example, social stratification studies inequality and class structure; demography studies changes in a population size or type; criminology examines criminal behavior and deviance; political sociology studies government and laws; and the sociology of race and sociology of gender examine society's racial and gender cleavages.

Sociology
The claims of sociology ( socius , companion; logos science ) to a place in the hierarchy of sciences are subjected to varied controversy. It has been held that there is no distinct problem for a science of sociology, no feature of human society not already provided for in the accepted social sciences . Again it has been claimed that while the future may hold out prospects for a science such as sociology, its present condition leaves much to be desired. Furthermore, among sociologists themselves discussion and disagreement abound concerning aims, problems, and methods of the science . Beyond this confusion in scientific circles, misunderstanding results from the popular habit of confounding sociology with philanthropy, ethics charity , and relief, social reform, statistics , municipal problems, socialism , sanitation, criminology , and politics. It is hardly to be expected that differences of opinion would not occur when scholars endeavour to describe in simple terms the complex social processes; to pack a vast array of

A Note From the President
I am pleased to report that two well-known scholars (and speakers) have agreed to give plenary addresses at the upcoming RSS meetings in Boise. Both will talk on topics that are highly relevant to our theme of blurring spatial and social boundaries. Claude Fischer, Cal-Berkeley , will talk about his newly published social history of 20th century America (Made in America: A Social History of American Culture and Character, 2010, University of Chicago Press). Linda Burton, Duke , will talk about her new work on low-income rural minority families. Her talk is tentatively titled: "From Urban to Rural Poverty: An Ethnographic Journey." Please get out the word. Invite your colleagues to Boise. Best, Dan
