The April 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallaj鰇ull in Iceland has caused immediate disruption of air traffic in and to Europe, and may have longer-term implications for climate change. Further south, the ongoing oil catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico may destroy regional wildlife and fisheries for decades. Both of these events have raised new public and research concerns over food issues.

Sociology
From LoveToKnow 1911
SOCIOLOGY; a science which in the most inclusive sense may be defined as that of human society, in the same manner that Biology may be taken to imply the science of life. The word Sociologic was first used by Comte in 1839 as an equivalent of the expression, social physics, previously in use, and was introduced, he said, to describe by a single term that part of natural philosophy which relates to the positive study of the fundamental laws of social phenomena. The word is a hybrid, compounded from both Latin and Greek terms. It is now generally accepted in international usage; none of the terms, such as politics, political science, social economy, social philosophy and social science which have been suggested instead of it having succeeded in taking its place. There has been in the past a certain hesitation, especially in England , to admit sociology as the title of a particular science in itself until it was made clear what the subject must be considered to cover. In certain quarters sociology is still often incorrectly spoken of as if it implied the practical equivalent of the science of politics. Henry Sidgwick , for instance, considered the word as usually employed in this sense, and while he himself recognized that sociology must have a wider scope than politics, he thought that in practice "the difference between the two subjects is not indeed great" ( Elements of Politics).

Sociology is an academic and applied discipline that studies society and human social interaction. Sociological research ranges from the analysis of short contacts between anonymous individuals on the street to the study of global social processes . Numerous fields within the discipline focus on how and why people are organized in society, either as individuals or as members of associations, groups, and institutions. As an academic discipline, sociology is typically considered a social science. Sociological research provides educators

Kenyon.edu People Sociology engages students in the systematic examination of social life, from everyday encounters to the movements of civilizations throughout history. Theory and methods provide the tools that we use to analyze social patterns, social action, and social change. These tools also help prepare sociology majors for a variety of careers including education, research, social work, law, non-profit work, social activism, and business, politics, or graduate studies. Faculty expertise ranges from American folklore, to legal issues, race, culture, gender, globalization, health, social movements, and the intellectual roots of Western social thought. The sociology program is also the base for the Rural Life Center , through which students undertake wide-ranging field studies and create public projects such as documentary exhibits about rural life. Summer Legal Studies Scholar Program The 2010 summer legal scholars traveled to Oxford University for a two-week intensive seminar on legal thought and practice. In many ways, taking a course in sociology is very much like signing up to watch the evening news. You learn about crime and juvenile delinquency, urban growth and social problems, social institutions and social change, mass society and multicultural concerns. Unlike the media coverage of "newsworthy" events, sociology encourages you to examine issues and social events with a critical eye, searching for the news behind the news. You will learn to evaluate what you see and read, to ask "why" and seek a better understanding of the world. The excitement of sociology lies in the scope of human behavior involved. Sociology is the study of relationships people share with each other, the study of change and its effects, and a study to challenge common sense assumptions about these. The study of sociology offers you an opportunity to develop the skills of critical inquiry for problem solving. Sociology is a discipline resting on the premise that knowledge is power. The faculty of the department of sociology are committed to the democratic belief in the power of scientific reason to solve human social problems. As a faculty, we believe that an ability to think critically about public affairs is one of the marks of an educated person and a key to the resolution of many important problems. Consistent with these beliefs and commitments, the faculty鈥檚 primary aims are to provide high quality teaching, research, and public service in social science.
