PROGRESSIVE SOCIOLOGISTS NETWORK P S N PSN is a moderated list devoted to the examination of issues of theoretical and political importance to sociologists. We seek intellectually stimulating debates around issues such as the nature of the "New World Order," the globalization of capital, the redistribution of labor from the South to the North and its effects on labor struggles, racism, sexism, sexual politics, the resurgence of white supremacist groups, nationalism and ethnic struggles, the future of democracy in an increasingly polarized world and so forth. Last, but not least, we seek a debate about the relevance of Marxism for the theoretical and empirical investigation of the present historical conjuncture. We especially encourage the participation of graduate students through an atmosphere that is supportive as well as intellectually stimulating. PSN has hosted a seminar on the 150th anniversary of the Manifesto Join PSN today! Suggestions, comments (supportive or otherwise:) should be sent to the moderators:

Studying at the University of Oxford
Sociology in Oxford is concerned with real-world issues with policy relevance, such as social inequality, organised crime, the social basis of political conflict and mobilization, and changes in family relationships and gender roles. Our research is empirical, analytical, and comparative in nature, reaching far beyond British society, to encompass systematic cross-national comparison as well as the detailed study of Asian, European, Latin American and North American societies. Statistical analysis of large-scale survey data is one of our core strengths. And we are at the forefront in developing new research methods, including the analysis of complex social networks and computer simulation. The Centre for Experimental Social Sciences (at Nuffield College) provides infrastructure for designing and conducting social experiments. Our expertise also encompasses ethnographic studies and archival/historical research. In addition, Oxford sociologists lead the development of analytical sociology which identifies generalizable social mechanisms and elucidates the logic of individual action.

    THE HOME OF Sociology Review
Welcome to the Department of Sociology
The Department of Sociology at Leicester is one of the most prominent and influential in the country. It was one of the first departments of sociology to be established in Britain, and has a long and well-respected tradition both in teaching and research. There are few branches of the discipline in which it has not had some influence. The Department's graduates have for many years been a major force in the shaping of teaching and research in other universities and colleges. Many of the well-known sociologists in this country have been students and/or teachers at Leicester. Apart from the present Vice Chancellor, Professor Robert Burgess, an eminent sociologist of education and methodologist, important names from the past include Norbert Elias, Ilya Neustadt, Anthony Giddens, Joe and Olive Banks, Miriam Glucksmann, Nicos Mouzelis, John Goldthorpe, Terry Johnson, Paul Hirst, Derek Layder, John Scott and Eric Dunning. Our aim is to continue our outstanding record by engaging in sociological research in a wide range of topics.
