The Academic Program
Urban and regional planning (PLAN) is a dynamic field, that is still evolving. It emerged out of the convergence of two concerns: (1) the provision of urban infrastructure and (2) the initiation of social reform. While the underlying focus on community well-being continues, urban and regional planning today has broadened to include the development, implementation, and evaluation of a wide range of policies. Specifically, urban and regional planners, in both developing and developed countries, are concerned with the following:
  • The use of land in the city, in the suburbs, and in rural areas, particularly with the transition from one use to another;

      The Core Curriculum
      Successful completion of the report, thesis or examination is required before the degree can be awarded. A professional report is an analysis of a real-world planning issue or process, completed in a manner that demonstrates professional judgment and competence. It provides the opportunity for students to exercise judgment in diagnosing a planning problem, in selecting appropriate analytical methods, in posing and evaluating alternative approaches, and in recommending an approach. For most MURP students, the professional report is the preferred exit requirement, because the professional report allows students to develop and hone practice-related skills. Recognizing, though, that for some students a research experience will be more appropriate, the PPD Department allows a small number of research oriented MURP students to write a thesis in lieu of a professional report. Typically, students who choose a masters thesis option will be considering Ph.D. study or research careers. For more information in how to pursue a Thesis, see the MURP thesis
      Employment Opportunities
      The range of employment opportunities for planners in the public, private and non-governmental sectors is expanding due to rapid metropolitan growth, mounting concerns over environmental sustainability, rising social inequality and the continuing need for services in poorer communities. Career paths exist in government agencies that deal with urban planning, economic development, regional growth management, air quality and water treatment and public utilities.

    Urban and Regional Planning
    Urban and Regional Planning is about effectively managing the shared spaces in which people live, work and play, whether this be in large regions and cities, or smaller towns, suburbs and neighbourhoods. Planning is particularly concerned with ensuring that places cater for different groups and individuals fairly, efficiently and sustain ably, and that our cities and towns provide for a range of opportunities for those who need them. Ensuring that our cities and towns are more ecologically sustainable, socially just and economically productive is at the heart of urban and regional planning practice. Planners come from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds and are usually interested in research and in analysing the way places change over time. They also need to be willing to challenge and question the way our cities and regions are currently designed and managed with a view to recognising what needs to be maintained and what needs to be changed.

          The Programme
          Spatial planning seeks to ensure the appropriate development goes in the appropriate places, from the neighbourhood right up to cross-national scales. It manages the use and development of land to create employment and wealth, prevent social exclusion, and sustain the environment. It makes our environment a better place to work, rest and play. Students may take a sandwich year in practice between years three and four of the course. Following the degree, preparation through practice and an assessment of professional competence enable students to apply to join the Royal Town Planning Institute.
          First Year
          Introduces students to the main features, operating context and professions of the built environment sector. Emphasising a theme of sustainable development, students study: Construction; Economics; History; Environment Issues; Planning and Property; and an interdisciplinary practical project. Students also join a residential study tour.
          Second Year
          Lays down a solid foundation with subjects such as: Development Planning; Property Law; Urban Governance; Management Theory and Practice; Urban Economics; Design of Place and Valuation. Students are assessed by a combination of project work, assignments and examinations.
