Women's studies were first conceived as an academic rubric apart from other departments in the late 1970s, as the second wave of feminism gained political influence in the academy through student and faculty activism . As an academic discipline, it was modeled on the American studies and ethnic studies (such as Afro-American studies ) and Chicano Studies programs that had arisen shortly before it.

Women Studies is an interdisciplinary program dedicated to exploring women’s experience through their roles, contributions, and scholarship. As such, the program studies the diverse representations of women within the contexts of ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, and gender.
In the Women's Studies program, students are encouraged to critically think about women’s place in contemporary society while discovering the lost contents of women’s contributions in the past. Women’s Studies prepares students for employment and for graduate work through a variety of interdisciplinary courses from the Schools of Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, Health Professions and Social and Behavioral Sciences.
We are proud of our interdisciplinary program and of our diverse faculty. These are faculty who have helped in the creation and restructuring of our program courses. Many are faculty who are recognized scholars in their fields.

The Women's Studies Major The Women's Studies major offers students a focused yet flexible concentration in the study of women and/or gender across many disciplines. Students pursuing the major take three required Women's Studies courses plus two core and five elective cou rses selected from the Women's Studies Course List. Of the five electives representing three different departments required as part of the major, students choose three to cluster into a topic area , which will provide the framework for the culminating project in the senior year. The director of Women's Studies advises on topic areas, approves course clusters, and meets with all students undertaking senior projects. With the Director's approval, one internship for academic credit may count as one of the electives. All 10 courses must be taken for a letter grade. 12. Programs In Women's Studies At SUNY Stony Brook
Women's Studies is an interdisciplinary area of scholarship and research that focuses on the significance of gender as a variable in experience, history, and culture.
http://www.stonybrook.edu/womenstudies/
Women's Studies is an interdisciplinary area of scholarship and research that focuses on the significance of gender as a variable in experience, history, and culture. Women's Studies raises questions that often have been ignored or marginalized, and it makes the experience and history of women central to the study of any human concern. Scholarship in Women's Studies demonstrates the need to recognize new models of knowledge, as well as the need to be critical of theories and approaches that do not take into account the difference of gender. In so doing, Women's Studies serves as a privileged site for "reflective critique," and it has often challenged the traditional disciplines to reflect on their concepts and methods in ways that have enriched those disciplines. At Stony Brook the Women's Studies Program introduces students to the history of feminism, as well as its contemporary theories and methods. Feminist theory in a global context provides the background for a critique of the social construction of gender and its relation to other systems of privilege. The major and minor in Women's Studies are designed for students interested in the interdisciplinary study of gender and women. The programs emphasize the development of skill in critical thinking, argumentation, and writing. The program consists of a set of core courses offered by Women's Studies, as well as related courses in other disciplines. Students wishing to complete the major or minor should consult the department and establish an advising folder by the beginning of the junior year or sooner.

What makes the Women's Studies Department at UCR unique is the way we combine theory with informed action, and focus on understanding the varieties of feminism throughout the world today. Our students and faculty come from a wide range of ethnic, racial, and national backgrounds, and our department values such diversity in the production of knowledge. The curriculum is designed to help students learn from the similarities and differences in women's experiences in this country and around the world. We cross traditional academic disciplines to investigate such topics as the roles of women in developing countries and in migration; the ways gender interacts with race, ethnicity, and class; how gender shapes performance and the expressive arts; how gender categories operate in our own and other societies; the history and contemporary theories of sex and sexualities; and new directions in feminist theory and methods of research.
