The discussion led to many questions: Why is the only programming on radio a mix of soft adult contemporary or pop songs and silly morning programs? Why is all the talk programming on the AM dial, and why is it almost all political and dominated by a male point of view. This discussion was the genesis of what would become GreenStone Media." Women's Studies

Intersections of gender, race, class, ethnicity, and sexuality within global contexts are intrinsic to the curriculum within the Women's Studies Department at the University at Albany. Several of the sites on this page have been intentionally selected to address this emphasis. As it would be difficult to comprehensively cover every geographical area, representative examples of sites which address global perspectives have been selected. Subject Resources for Sociology, Latin American and Caribbean Studies and others will also be useful to consult. The database indexes six types of materials: books and government documents; articles appearing in edited books; periodical and journal articles; Masters theses and Ph.D. dissertations as well as a few B.A. theses and honors papers; conference papers; and videocassettes." The database indexes what the compiler can find published in English about African women. This database is the outgrowth of a three volume work published in 1989 by Greenwood Press that indexed materials on African Women published during the International Women's Decade, 1975-1985.

offers interdisciplinary perspectives on the formation of gender and its intersections with other relations of power, such as sexuality, race, class, nationality, religion, and age. Questions are addressed within the context of a transnational world and from perspectives as diverse as history, sociology, literary and cultural studies, postcolonial theory, science, new technology, and art. The undergraduate program is designed to introduce students to women's studies, focusing on gender as a category of analysis and on the workings of power in social and historical life. The department offers an introduction to feminist theory as well as more advanced courses that seek to expand capacities for critical reflection and analysis and to engage students with varied approaches to feminist research. The curriculum draws students into interdisciplinary analysis of specific gender practices in areas such as feminism in a transnational world, the politics of representation, feminist science studies, women and work, women and film, gender and health, and the politics of childhood. The department offers an undergraduate major and minor and participates in the campus-wide Undergraduate Student Learning Initiative

Women's Studies
The breadth and flexibility of the major enables students to choose among a variety of courses in many disciplines that suit their needs and interests as well as to tailor their course of study to develop a specialization within Women's Studies. Because the Women's Studies major is made up of courses that also count toward minors and majors in other disciplines, it also offers students the opportunity to pursue minors or dual majors in other fields to supplement and apply their training in Women's Studies with fewer additional credits to complete. As documented in national studies of Women's Studies graduates, a major in Women's Studies prepares students for a broad array of graduate and professional programs and a broad range of careers in such areas as research, writing, teaching, public policy, social and health services, law, business, and communications in public, private, and nonprofit organizations at local, national, and international levels. Students seeking admission to the major must possess an overall GPA of 2.0. To graduate with a degree in Women's Studies, students must complete, along with university and college requirements, 20 hours of core courses and 31-36 hours of additional requirements, and maintain a grade of "C" or higher in all approved WMS courses taken for the major, 40 hours of which must be at the 300-level or above.

Women's Studies
Women's Studies is an interdisciplinary, cross-cultural and transnational discipline rooted in feminist theory and shaped by the social sciences, humanities and natural sciences, as well as movements for social justice. It places women's lives at the center of its attention, examining the experience of women through the lens of gender, and attending to ways gender intersects with other social categories such as race, class, nationality/ethnicity and sexuality. Women's Studies challenges patriarchal norms that subordinate women in many spheres of endeavor. Feminist scholarship and teaching provides students with effective tools to dialogue across difference, restructure knowledge, and participate in the process of social change. The program cultivates skills in writing, research and presentation, and provides opportunities to engage in feminist activism locally, nationally and internationally through travel/study, community-based service learning, and internships with various organizations.
Program Overview
SDSU established a department of Women's Studies in 1970, making it the oldest program in the United States. The Women's Studies Department has developed a national and international reputation for excellence in its curriculum and faculty. SDSU offers students a unique opportunity to pursue a coherent and independent course of study leading to a degree in Women's Studies.

    Welcome to the WS Homepage!
Women's Studies is an exciting, interdisciplinary area of study that celebrates women's lives. It examines how diverse women have contributed to history, social processes, culture, politics and economics, as well as how all of these have shaped women's experiences. Our program provides new ways of looking at common assumptions about femininity and masculinity and teaches students how to connect what they study with how they live and work. We also explore how gender intersects with ability, age, class, culture, ethnicity, nationality, race, religion, and sexuality. Our Leadership through Diversity focus promotes a creative struggle for justice and equality. We train graduates to be leaders in both civic engagement and the workforce. The Women's Studies Program is comprised of dedicated faculty and staff and socially conscious students coming together from a wide range of disciplines. Our courses typically are small and are offered out of a variety of departments, including Criminal Justice, History, Literature and Language, Communication, Sociology, Philosophy, Psychology, Social Work, Art, and Nursing. In addition to an academic Minor and recently approved Major, Women's Studies sponsors a variety of campus events and programs throughout the year. Check out our mission statement and our last newsletter in the right column for more information about us.

text Where We Started The Women's Studies Program was established at the University of Iowa in 1974 and is one of the oldest programs in the United States. Our initial strength in joint appointments in the social sciences made the program unique within an interdisciplinary field most often drawn from the humanities. Our recent appointments give us strength in both social sciences and the humanities and enable us to continue to develop the breadth of interdisciplinary strength we believe to be the cornerstone of a strong women's studies program. Certainly, the interdisciplinary nature of the program evokes strong support from faculty and students who consider themselves part of the Women's Studies community even though their ties are informal and their rewards intrinsic.

Welcome to Women Studies Women studies provides a framework for understanding how questions of sexuality, race, disability, class, gender, age, and nationality affect not only the ways in which people live their lives but also the environment and society at large.
Women studies encourages students to engage both intellectually and politically with issues of everyday as well as historical importance. Our students learn actively through community internships and by contributing to ongoing movements for social change around the world. Current Events
Updated 10/29/2010 Permanent Course List Women Studies Newsletter What Can I do with a Women Studies Degree? Our Mission Statement: Our scholarship draws upon rich and varied histories of feminist thought to push the analytic edge of scholarship foregrounding gender, race and sexuality as integral components of local and global social structures, particularly within the contexts of capitalism, globalization, nationalism and neoliberalism.  We orient around social justice concerns by employing a relational analytics of power, representation and transnational circulation.  We see ourselves as pushing against various disciplinary, institutional and governmentality practices. The sites of our analysis include race/racism, ethnicity and immigration, cultural production and circulation, economic circulation and knowledge constructions, among many others. We draw on interdisciplinary methodologies to facilitate these inquires which are strongly influenced by social sciences but reshaped through the humanities, genealogy, cultural studies and post-structuralism.
