Women's Studies
Students of Jenn Brandt's WMS 150 class use their newfound knowledge to analyze images of gender in the media. The discipline of Women's Studies has a vision of a world free from sexism. By necessity, freedom from sexism must include a commitment to freedom from national chauvinism; class, ethnic, racial, and heterosexual bias; economic exploitation; religious persecution; ageism; and ableism. Women's studies seeks to identify, understand, and challenge ideologies and institutions that knowingly or unknowingly oppress and exploit others, or deny fundamental human rights. Thus, women's studies envision a world in which all persons can develop their fullest potential. Women's studies use feminist and interdisciplinary methods to teach, conduct research, and expand existing bodies of knowledge. Critical thinking, the production of theory, and the assumption of community and global responsibility are integral to these methods. We are committed to deliberative processes that promote open expression and collaboration. Understanding the interrelationship between the personal and political, we support and promote feminist teaching, learning, research, scholarship, creative activity, and professional and community service.

Women’s Studies
What is the purpose of higher education for women? Is there any information or material in the curriculum that describes or responds to women’s lives? Where in the curriculum are women? Women’s studies scholars raised these questions, and women’s studies courses are the answer to these questions. The discovery of knowledge about women has been cited as the most important and most exciting academic frontier of the century. This explosion of new information has been generated and disseminated primarily within women’s studies. Women’s studies is an area of study that addresses the experiences and contributions of women from multidisciplinary perspectives. Women’s studies, both nationally and at IUP, is committed to working for an educational environment that is conducive to the personal and academic development of female students, staff, and faculty members. IUP offers a minor in Women’s Studies. As a minor course of study, Women’s Studies is designed to examine the status and experiences of women from a multidisciplinary perspective. The courses use a variety of methods and disciplinary perspectives to explore the impact of gender. Students are encouraged to challenge traditional theories and research regarding women and to develop a critical, multidisciplinary, multicultural, and gendered view of the world. Courses in women’s studies address social equity issues and encourage students to perceive themselves as capable of transforming society.

Minor in Women’s Studies FACULTY
Renae Bredin, Rebecca Dolhinow, Donna Nicol, Karyl Ketchum INTRODUCTION
Women’s Studies emphasizes the study of gender-based movements, gendered experience, research, analysis and theory, from a women-centered perspective, as subjects and as researchers. Core courses incorporate information technologies and community service learning experiences that offer students opportunities to develop essential skills and civic commitments. Students develop links to the community and to businesses and professional sites where they have opportunities to apply and evaluate the research, methods and theories that they are studying. THE MAJOR
The major in women’s studies is designed for students who have a particular interest in learning more about the roles and status of women in society. Cross-disciplinary in structure, the major draws from a wide variety of courses offered by many departments throughout the university. Women’s studies majors develop proficiency in a wide variety of research methodologies appropriate to humanities and the social sciences, as well as the areas of business, science and the arts. The goals of the major are to apply concepts learned in women’s studies courses to other academic areas, to encourage more students to do research in the area and to prepare students in selected career paths where sensitivity to women’s issues is important (particularly in business, education, counseling, human services, public administration and the health professions, as well as liberal arts degrees in general).

  • Undergraduate ... Undergraduate Women's Studies Changes in women's roles throughout the world are among the most deeply transforming forces in contemporary society. The social movement of women has a long and rich history, yet it is in recent decades particularly that we have witnessed an explosion of knowledge about the roles, status, experiences, and achievements of women. The interdisciplinary field of women's studies integrates the perspectives and methods of many research disciplines with the aim of providing a cohesive understanding of the complex interactions between gender and social structure, personality, behavior and cognition, historical development, and creative expression. Some of the specific issues addressed in women's studies courses include the roles of women in their communities—both their individual contributions and their function as a class in the economy and in society; the nature of the family; the recovery of women's distinctive intellectual and artistic achievements; the nature and extent of the commonalities as well as the racial, class, and national differences in women's experiences; the origin and perpetuation of sex roles; and the dynamics of change.
Mills was one of the first colleges to offer a major in women's studies. A special feature of the major is a fieldwork project with one of the many women's organizations in the Bay Area. While a student's academic courses will address the position of women from a variety of standpoints, she will be expected to focus primarily on one discipline, such as sociology, history, visual arts, or literature. This focus will be reflected in the senior project, a major investigative or creative work undertaken with the guidance of two faculty members.

Women's Studies at Earlham College
Women's Studies fosters self-reflection and rigorous, feminist, interdisciplinary analysis. We combine these practices with collaborative and activist work for social justice. As we examine the category "women" and its instability, we also keep faith with living humans, nationally and internationally, for whom being a "woman" is a daily concern.
In Women’s Studies, one is continually coming to new ideas and understandings about the field itself. This lack of clarity is one of the most powerful and important gifts the field has to offer. It is noteworthy that the name of our field contains within it a sort of central tension. Committed to bringing value to women’s voices, history, literature while troubling the category of “woman” itself, Women’s Studies contains within its perimeters profound challenges to its deepest concerns. Confrontations to the category of "woman" are central to the Women’s Studies program at Earlham. Women’s Studies classes are responsible for both grounding students’ strongest convictions and undermining and troubling those very convictions.
Women's Studies classes attract students who pursue degrees in all disciplines and programs at Earlham. We particularly enjoy close and reciprocal relationships with
