An expedition event can span ten days or more while sprints can be completed in a matter of hours. There is typically no dark period during races, irrespective of length; competitors must choose if or when to rest. Adventure racing historically required teams to be of a specified size and to include both men and women, but many races no longer restrict team size and include single-sex divisions. Some also include age-based categories.

The roots of adventure racing are deep and people debate the origin of the modern adventure race. Some point to the two-day Karrimor International Mountain Marathon , first held in 1968 as the birth of modern adventure racing. The Karrimor Marathon required two-person teams to traverse mountainous terrain while carrying all the supplies required to support themselves through the double-length marathon run.

An equal-opportunity event for leeches, bacteria-ridden water, foot-rot and other nuisances to attack the human body 3. The original reason behind the question, “Why would someone ever want to do that to themselves?”
During the running craze of the ’70s, marathon reigned supreme: a 26.2-mile ultimate endurance test. By the time the ’80s rolled around, marathons held about as much appeal as the previous decade’s velour jogging suits, and triathlon gained widespread recognition as the ultimate in athletic challenges. With the ‘90s, a whole new era of competition was ushered in with the dawn of adventure racing.

Adventure Racing From Morocco, to Patagonia, to the Bay of Fundy, adventure racing is everywhere. It's one of the fastest growing outdoor sports and is also the toughest. While there are no hard and fast rules, the races usually consist of four or five disciplines, and the teams must have both sexes represented. The most difficult races are five to ten days of nonstop action and include a mix of climbing, paddling, cycling and running. Fitness, endurance, skill and intelligence are key elements for any team, but it's how well a team works together that will really decide their fate. When you haven't slept in 36 hours, you're cold, wet, and lost, flaring tempers and discord will sink the whole team. Remember most races require all members to finish together or be disqualified. Home Welcome The sport of Adventure Racing is sweeping the nation at a phenomenal rate. The new challenges presented to adventure racers have caused the sport to grow by leaps and bounds daily in popularity. Adventure Racing is one of the few sports where just completing a race is often considered a victory. Another driving factor in Adventure racing is the emphasis that is placed on teamwork, rather than individual achievement. Adventure Racing offers an easy crossover for cyclist, runners and water sport enthusiasts just to mention a few. Adventure races can vary anywhere from 2-5 person teams, with some events now offering solo categories. The disciplines can also vary from race to race. Adventure racing can include shredding through tight single track on a mountain bike or orienteering and hiking through a dense forest. Adventure racers may find themselves ripping down rapids in a canoe and then rappelling off a 100 foot rock face. The races can last a few hours or several days and can cover 10 - 100 miles or more! The USARA membership entitles you to all of this and a whole lot more! Joining the USARA gives you a one year license that allows you to race in any USARA Sanctioned event in the nation. USARA members will also receive Adventure World Magazine. Adventure World Magazine is jam packed with exciting race news and training tips. So climb on board, get your USARA racing license, and dive into the exciting new challenges of Adventure Racing.
