Pamela Thorburn to Begin Her Fund-raising Quest: Skiing
Strathaven skier Pamela Thorburn needs £40,000 to remain at the top of her sport by training with the Canadian Ski Team and she was left high and dry after Snowsport GB. To February’s Winter Olympics in Vancouver , Snowsport GB, the sport’s governing body collapsed in the build-up. In addition, since then, for the Winter Games, Pam narrowly missed qualification, she has been left without the financial backing, and coaching needed to compete at the top level. But next month, to link up with the Canadian team by hosting a Snowflake Fundraiser in Glasgow, she begins her fund-raising quest.

About the Sport
Alpine skiing has been practiced in the European Alps for at least 150 years. In addition to adapting cross-country techniques to suit their steeper slopes, alpine skiers also found they needed slightly wider skis to go downhill safely, and developed different ways to use their poles and new turning techniques to match the more vertical terrain of the high mountains. The sport became increasingly popular through the early 20th century with the development of T-bars, tows and ski lifts, as alpine skiers no longer had to climb up a slope before skiing down. Alpine skiing for both men and women debuted as an Olympic sport in 1936 at Garmisch-Partenkirchen . In , separate downhill and slalom races were added. From that time, super combined was not contested at an Olympic Winter Games until 1988, in Calgary . The giant slalom was added in , and the super-G in 1988. How It Works In alpine skiing, racers can reach speeds of more than 130 kilometres an hour, travelling down a vertical drop that ranges from 180 metres (slalom) to 1,100 metres (downhill) for men and 140 metres (slalom) to 800 metres (downhill) for women. The vertical drop is made even more difficult because of a series of gates the skiers must pass through. Skiers who miss a gate must then climb back up and go through the missed gate or be disqualified.

Summit Ski Club is Number 1... Again!
(March 21, 2010) - For the second year running, the Summit Ski Club won the Overall Provincial Championship for the Manitoba Alpine Ski Division (M.A.S.D.)! Athletes performed extremely well at all levels of the club, each contributing to the club's overall win. Summit's Steven Horbas took the M.A.S.D. Overall Male Championship for his second year in a row. Steven's win was only finalized in the very last race of the season. A few 100ths of a second was what it took to get the win. The close competion made for an action packed season and an exciting final race! Steven, who started with the Summit Ski Club in the Nancy Greene program, trains and races as a member of the M.A.S.D. Provincial Team. Now competing in F.I.S. level competion, Steven travels to Thuderbay and the Mid-USA. Congratulations on an another outstanding season!
