Alpine Skiing
Alpine skiing is an exciting winter sport that challenges the athlete's downhill racing ability and coordination. Alpine skiing goes far beyond any other winter sport in that it defines almost completely at least a hundred resort communities around the world and is a major factor in many more.
The Alpine skiing advanced from cross-country skiing when ski elevator infrastructure was developed at mountain resorts to tow skiers back to the top of slopes, thus making it possible to repeatedly enjoy skiing down steep, long slopes that would be otherwise too tiring to climb up. Thus, the sport is popular wherever the combination of snow, mountain slopes, and a sufficient tourist infrastructure can be built up, including much of all the world.
The main technical challenges faced by skiers are simply how to control and dominate the direction and speed of their descent. The novice skiers use a technique called the "snowplough" to turn and stop by pointing one or both skis inward, but more advanced skiers use more complicated but more artistic and speedier methods. These more advanced methods are known as carving. To carve, a skier rolls their knees but keeps the upper body and hips faced down the hill, so that only the knees and feet are turned (only in slalom do you keep your upper body pointing down the hill). This method is far faster and is used by downhill racers. As skiers gain confidence, they tackle steeper, longer and more uneven slopes at higher speeds.

Alpine Skiing
History
Discipline's Origin
People began strapping skis to their feet as far back as 5000 years ago. It is believed that Norwegians were the first - they used skis as a way of hunting across snow-covered terrain. From Norway, skiing spread throughout Scandinavia and Russia as a mode of winter transportation and eventually as a sport similar to cross-country skiing. Alpine skiing evolved from cross-country skiing. The first alpine skiing competition, a primitive downhill, was held in the 1850s in Oslo. A few decades later, the sport spread to the remainder of Europe and to the United States, where miners held skiing competitions to entertain themselves during the winter. The first slalom was organised in 1922 in Mürren, Switzerland, and two years later such a race became the first Olympic Alpine event. The Arlberg-Kandahar, a combined slalom and downhill event, is now referred to as the first legitimate Alpine event - the race that planted the seed for Alpine's inclusion in the Olympic programme.

Downhill
Skis: Super G

This race is only slightly slower and involves slightly more turns than the downhill. It, too, is a one-run event that involves high-speed turns, which may also include jumps and gliding phases, and absolute concentration. The super G was introduced a few decades back to feed the appetite of the TV viewers for high-speed skiing.
Skis: Super-G skis are a little shorter and a little easier to turn. Allowable turning radius is 33 meters. They, too, are narrow and have a low-profile tip. Men's skis are between 209 and 212 centimeters and women's around 201 to 212. Giant slalom
Called the most graceful of the events, the giant slalom is, some racers argue, the most difficult event to win. This is a two-run race with the combined times determining the winner. It involves precise turns, and one little mistake can prove costly. This is a technical race that requires racers to ride a flat ski, step into the turns early and be as soft on the skis as a ballerina in a pirouette.
Skis: Here is where the skis start to take shape and go shorter. The introduction of shaped skis has caused a real revolution in racing. The allowable radius with the giant-slalom ski is 21 meters, meaning skiers can turn more quickly and easily. The men race on shaped skis between 193 and 198 centimeters and the women on 183s. Shaped skis are wider at the tip and tail and narrower at the waist, which allows the ski to transfer to a turning edge sooner. A few years back, all the giant-slalom skis were over 200 centimeters.
