Alpine Skiing
People began strapping skis to their feet as far back as 5,000 years ago. Englishman Sir Arnold Lunn and Austrian Hannes Schneider invented modern alpine racing. Lunn, a son of a London travel agent, spent his years traveling through the Alps and envisioning racing through the majestic range. Lunn organized the first slalom in 1922 in Muerren, Switzerland, and joined forces with Schneider two years later to organize the race that would become the first Olympic alpine event.

Competition
Alpine skiing is among the most exciting Olympics events and was introduced to the Olympic program at the 1936 Garmisch-Partenkirchen Games with a men's and women's combined event, featuring a downhill and two slalom runs. After the cancellation of the following two Games because of war, alpine skiing returned to St. Moritz with a program of six events. The Oslo Games in 1952 welcomed giant slalom to the program and marked the departure of the combined event. The combined event did not return until 1988.

Artistic ski, a lofty alpine ski Quality: Poor Medium High Quality: Poor Medium High Contact: Strada Aleea Teilor, Nr.4, Bl.2, Ap.7 Phone: +0040 248 224156 Email: stefan_ciortan@yahoo.com The alpine skiing which is considered the "king" sport of the wintry season, is learned and practiced all over the world only on sloping and snow-covered sides hill. Indeed, the alpine skiing can be learned and practiced only on slopes covered with snow and enough sloping so that the sportsman's sliding on the skis under the influence of the gravity force will have to overcome both the brake effect produced by the friction of the skis with the snow surface, and the slow down realized during the side-slip turnings. The skier’s try to make the “transition” from snowplough turnings to turnings with skis kept in parallel position can be done only by imitating the experienced skiers for a long period of time. Looking at these pictures you can see a 12 years old school girl who is skiing mastery, with the skis in a parallel position and making turnings in a room on a smooth and not covered with snow surface. The sport girl performs linear movement by sliding using her own forces towards the direction of the skis in movement, and in the same time performs swinging turnings.

Adaptive Ski Program
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of Richard Abruzzo and Carol Rymer-Davis during this difficult time. The Abruzzo Family - True Community Heroes It was terrible to learn of the disappearance of balloonists Richard Abruzzo and Carol Rymer Davis. Richard was not only a world veteran balloon pilot, but he, and the Abruzzo family, have been the most important benefactors of the Adaptive Ski Program (ASP). The ASP recently celebrated 25 years of programming at Ski Santa Fe and Sandia Peak. Our growth and success is due to many factors, but none more important than the ongoing support of the Abruzzo Family.

98. U.S. Adaptive Recreation Center Winter Program
Offers alpine ski and snowboard lessons to children and adults with virtually any disability. Includes contact and date information. Headquartered at Big Bear Mountain Resort in Big Bear Lake, California.
http://www.usarc.org/html/winter.html
As a member school of the Professional Ski Instructors of America, the USARC maintains high standards of service and safety. Each student is individually assessed by an instructor, outfitted with appropriate adaptive equipment and led through the lesson at a safe, yet challenging pace. The half-day or full-day lesson includes private instruction, lift ticket and equipment.
From December through March, physical and cognitive limitations are redefined through skiing and snowboarding. Using the best adaptive equipment and teaching techniques available, private one-on-one instruction maximizes each participant's potential for success. Mono-skis, bi-skis and outriggers allow beginners to quickly feel the freedom of gliding down the mountain while those with more skill and determination take on the advanced slopes.
Reservations, by individuals and groups, are required for all USARC programs. In addition, they should be made well in advance, as availability is limited and demand is high.
