"Stand over there and let me shoot this apple off your head. No. I promise. I’ll shoot the apple." From a distant grove of trees, a lone archer raises his crossbow, takes slow, careful aim, and with the twitch of a finger, impales danger with a deadly bolt. A skill requiring a steady aim and dexterous fingers, those who live “close to the land” often favor Archery. Archery and its Various Significant Aspects
        History of Archery
Modern International Competitive Archery Archery as an art and as a hunting equipment declined after the invention of the gun but was still used by many that loved traditional hunting methods. However, the delicate skills and techniques required to become expert archers was appreciated by sports lovers. Archery witnessed a revival and became part of many sports competitions, including the Olympics. Modern competitive archery requires the archers to shoot arrows at fixed targets from set distances. This is termed as target archery. In the United States and Europe, another type of competitive archery known as field archery is practiced, where the archers shoot at targets in wooden settings with the target distances varying in each competition. The tournament and competition rules vary from one organization to another. However, most of the modern archery competitions adopt the rules of the International Archery Federation. This Federation is called as FITA or Federation Internationale de Tir a l’Arc. Even the archery rules implemented in Olympic Games follow the FITA rules.

Unsourced material may be challenged and removed (October 2009) Modern competitive archery is governed by the International Archery Federation , abbreviated FITA (Fédération Internationale de Tir à l'Arc). Olympic rules are derived from FITA rules. FITA is the International Olympic Committee 's (IOC) recognized governing body for all of archery. Currently 142 nations are represented by FITA archery governing bodies. The largest of these are the FFTA (French archery federation) with approximately 60,000 members, FITARCO (Italian federation), DSB (German federation), AJAF (All-Japan archery federation), and the GNAS ( Grand National Archery Society ) of Great Britain, with approximately 30 000 members. In the United States the FITA affiliated governing body is USA Archery (National Archery Association of the United States), which dates to the 1870s, making it the second oldest archery governing body after GNAS, which dates to the 1860s. Target archery is the most popular form of archery , in which members shoot at stationary circular targets at varying distances. All types of bow - longbow, barebow, recurve and compound - can be used. In Great Britain

      • Individual men Individual women Team men Team women
An archer prepares to lift her bow. All four events will be competed under the FITA-approved 70-meter distance and rules. There will be a ranking round before moving on to the Olympic round, which will be played in a tournament format. In individual competition, there is a field of 64 individuals; in team competition, there is a field 16 teams. The ranking round will seed individual and team rounds; from there, the medal round will be conducted in tournament format where one loss will eliminate the competitor, save for the semifinals. In that round, the losers will move on to bronze medal competition; the winners will move on to compete for the gold medal. Beijing recap
49 nations took part in archery at the 2008 Games, but only six left with medals. Asian archers came away with eight of the 12 medals, including three gold. South Korea led the way with five medals (two gold, two silver, one bronze), followed by China (one gold, one silver, one bronze). The remaining four medals were won by European archers.
