For hundreds of years these islands have experienced foreign invasion. As a result the islanders absorbed many martial arts techniques into their own indigenous art of stick fighting. Filipino stick fighting is known by many names such as Arnis , Escrima and Kali , essentially they are variations of similar principles. As each island or region developed their own particular methods and techniques, they all had one common denominator, regardless of the weapon or style they are based upon a pattern of angles and footwork in a triangular pattern. During the 300 years of Spanish colonisation the art was forced underground and was practiced in secret. The Spanish banned all weapons and the practice of the martial arts. The Filipinos disguised their art in a dance form that was a particular favourite of the Spanish occupation forces. This dance form was known as the Arnis De Mano. Modern Arnis The Arnis which is practised today is a combination of the many different classical styles. These have been modified to create a style of martial arts which is more modern in its application. Arnis, like other systems of fighting, can be practised empty handed, or with the use of weapons. What makes Arnis unique is that it begins its training with the use of weapons, the student then proceeds to empty handed techniques. Unlike many martial arts, which rely on strength, Arnis places more emphasis on skill. The use of a weapon equalises students, making it ideal for people that would not normally be attracted to martial arts.

Over the centuries the Philippines has been a crossroad for various cultures trading and fighting. Records from the Malay Sri-Vishaya empire dating to the 8th century A.D. refer to Kali as the art of the Philippines.1 According to historians, the Ten Datus of Borneo brought their fighting methods to the island of Panay. Here, basic reading, writing and Kali were taught in the schools. On April 27, 1521, the explorer Magellan died on Mactan Island at the hands of Chief Lapu-Lapua Kali practitioner. Due to the loss of written records, the exact techniques of Kali remain a mystery today although elements of Kali remain alive in the foundation of today's Filipino Martial Arts. The Spanish began a 400 year occupation of the islands late in the 16th century. To suppress opposition to their rule, the Spanish banned the teaching of Kali. Elements of the art were hidden in folk plays and native dance. However, over time, Spanish fencing methods were blended into the indigenous fighting framework. Under Spanish influence, the native art became known as eskrima, estocada, arnis de mano or arnis. The Filipino Martial Arts assume different names in different regions. In the Manila area, the art is known as Arnis or Pananandata, in Pangasinan as Kalirongan, in the Ilocos region of Luzon as Kabaro-an, and in the Visayas as Eskrima.

Picture Gallery Testing Testing is a difficult time for everyone. The testing determines whether or not you are capable of advancing in rank. If you pass, then you receive your new rank at the next class after the belts and certificates arrive, if you don't, then you train for 6 months and try again. Testing occurs only twice a year, once in January and once in July. Testing is difficult and you can fail (although I've yet to see that happen to anyone). It is meant to put pressure on those taking the test because it shows how much knowledge you have under pressure as in real life situations.

Arnis Filipino stick and knife fighting Introduction Structure of syllabus Introduction Arnis or Filipino knife and stick fighting (also known as Escrima) is probably the most effective and practical system of combat developed using these weapons. A person trained in Arnis has the advantage over an unarmed attacker and can obviously face even an armed attacker with greater confidence. Of course, the stick or knife is a complement to unarmed skills and the full range of strikes, kicks, projections, throws and locks can all be used in conjuction with a stick and/or a knife. Arnis incorporates 3 methods: espada y daga (sword and dagger), solo baston (single stick) and sinawali (to weave) which uses two sticks as per the photo at the start of this page. The Wu-Wei Dao Arnis system is a composite of various Filipino systems, principally those taught by renowned masters Rene Latosa and Remy Presas.
