Introduction to Australian Rules Football
What is Australian Rules Football ?
Australian Rules Football (also "Aussie Rules" or "footy") is a physical contact sport. It is a form of football with roots traceable from early forms of Rugby and Gaelic football, but it is uniquely Australian. Its rules were codified in 1858, and probably predate all other modern forms of football, such as American, Canadian, Rugby Union and League, Association (Soccer) and Gaelic football. Today it is a multi-million dollar business, with a National Competition and numerous smaller leagues. Interest in the game is generally at an all time high within Australia, yet despite this, some parts of Australia are still lukewarm in support of their team in the AFL, and the game has yet to take a firm hold overseas.

Wayne Kraska Retires as US Freedom Coach
Submitted by USAFL on October 27, 2010 - 7:49pm The adage is that, "All good things must come to an end". One of those good things ended at the 2010 USAFL National Championships. US Freedom Head Coach Wayne Kraska announced his retirement from the USA Freedom. Prior to and during his reign as Freedom coach, Kraska built a dynasty in Atlanta where he coached the Lady Kookaburras to wins in the first three USAFL Women's National Championships (2005-2007). During this period, Kraska was integral in coaching and developing some of the league's most competitive players. In fact, the Kookaburras did not lose a game until they were narrowly defeated by Calgary in the 2008 Grand Final.

We come from a land Down Under
By Jim Caple
Page 2 columnist
Among the enjoyable lessons of travel is learning that the rest of the world is just as sports-crazed as we are. It's just that they care about sports we never even give a moment's thought. Consider Australia, where I had the pleasure of spending a recent two-week (and still too short) vacation. The Australians may be even more passionate about sports than we are, and what captured their interest most during my trip was the sage of Shane Warne. Shane's life, and bathroom habits, are Page 1 news Down Under. Unless you are very familiar with the taste of Vegemite, you probably have never heard of Shane Warne. He is Australia's finest cricket player and, according to the back cover of his biography, "perhaps the finest leg-spinner in cricket history." For my two weeks in Australia, I was fed a steady, unrelenting diet of stories about Warne, who was suspended from cricket for using a banned substance. Warne tested positive for a diuretic (which is sometimes used to mask steroid use), but claimed that he hadn't known it was a banned substance. I know, I know. That sort of thing happens all the time everywhere, and that's what the athlete always says when he's caught. But what made Warne's case special was his defense. He claimed his mother gave the diuretic pill to him so that he would look good for the cameras at a press conference. I swear, I'm not making that up.
