  • Autocross Club Racing Concours Drivers Ed Rallye Social Tech Scene Autocross PCA Chicago Autocross is a safe, low-cost automotive competition open to most sports cars as long as they pass tech inspection and are designed for performance driving. It is a timed competition where drivers navigate one at a time through a temporary course marked by traffic cones, rather than racing on a track with multiple other cars. Autocross places more emphasis on car control, handling and driver skill than on sheer horsepower. Porsche Autocross has many classes which allow any vintage Porsche to compete with other Porsches exhibiting similar performance characteristics. Non Porsches are allowed to compete, but they are not eligible for event trophies. Speeds are slower when compared to other forms of motorsports, usually not exceeding highway speeds, but the activity level (measured in discrete turns per minute) can be higher than any other form of motorsport due to the large number of elements packed into each course. The courses are typically 40 to 90 seconds in length. Autocrossing is an economical introduction to learning skills such as acceleration, braking, turn in, and other precision vehicle control that transfer to road racing. Autocross events are usually held in large paved areas like parking lots. New courses are created for each event so drivers must learn a new course each time they compete. Prior to driving, a competitor should walk the course, take mental and written notes, and develop a strategy to be refined upon each run.

Highlands Sports Car Club is an independent car club which is not affiliated with the SCCA. Although we are not an SCCA club, our events are very similar, if not identical, to what you would expect to find at an SCCA autocross. We have our own set of Autocross Rules (see below), but we follow SCCA Solo Rules with regard to safety standards and car classes. Registering for events: How does it work? Go to http://www.axwaresystems.com/ Online registration will automatically open 3 weeks before each event, and close at 5pm the day before. Although we currently still allow drivers to register in person at the event, we HIGHLY DISCOURAGE doing so. Online registration is the best method for everyone involved. Car Classes: As stated above, we defer to the SCCA for car classing. Any car defined in the SCCA Solo Rules is welcome at HSCC events. In addition to the standard SCCA classes, we have the following supplemental classes. A more detailed description of each can be found in the HSCC Autocross Rules.

About Car Numbers: For the event to run smoothly, it is essential that we be able to easily identify each car. You can help us do this by ensuring that your car is marked with clearly visible class letters and numbers. Although we are not going to force you to meet every single detail of the SCCA rule, please make sure that your car numbers meet the following guidelines:

Autocross courses are set up using soft orange traffic pylon cones (which will not damage your car) and events are run at speeds usually between 40-65 MPH, usually all in 2nd gear. Autocross is a "performance driving event" and a safe way to learn how to drive your car at its limits. You not only learn how to handle your car at speeds that you drive daily, but you also:
    • Gain confidence in your driving ability Learn the limits of your car's brakes Learn correct seating, hand, and feet positions Learn the limits of your car's tire adhesion
All levels of experience are welcome! Instructors will be provided for those that are new to the sport. Most importantly, autocross is a social gathering of friends with a common interest and is simply a ton of fun!

An autocross is often competitive, but is always educational and social.
The competitive aspect involves negotiating a pre-designed course averaging about one minute in duration. Cars are usually divided into classes according to performance capabilities. The elapsed time on course for each car is timed and recorded. A one second penalty is assessed for each pylon tipped over or knocked out of place, and the penalty is added to the elapsed time. The corrected times are compared with others in the car's class and are used to determine event placing.
The educational aspect involves learning the characteristics of your car, its strengths and limits, and how it will respond to driver input in a variety of conditions. The social aspect includes getting to know the other drivers from within the Redwood Region.

    http://www.aswmc.org.uk/autox.htm
Autocross Autocross dates back to the early 1950's, where clubs would organise timed runs around a course set out in a farmers field. In 1954 Taunton MC were the first club in the country to organise a series of Autocross events, they scored another first in 1959, when they were awarded the first permit to run a British National Autocross event. The sport caught on and in 1963 the ASWMC Autocross Championship came into being. During the 60's and 70's the sport was at its peak and was pulling between 2 - 3000 spectators at regional events and entries of 70 to 80 cars. Today the sport still runs to the same basic format of timed runs around circuit laid out in a field, with the exception of the 4 a-breast Sandocross at Weston-Super-Mare, which takes place on the beach, the only event of its kind in mainland Britain. Autocross events will run up to four cars side by side, sometimes two, and singly if conditions are very dry and dusty. Timing is against the clock, so if you want that fastest time, you will have to beat the competitor alongside you into the first corner and then stay in front. Conditions of the track can change rapidly, so you need to be adjusting your driving technique all the time to find the best traction to achieve the fastest time. Circuit lengths are about 1000 metres and a you normally get about 3 or 4 laps for each timed run, during the day with practice runs you will get somewhere in the region of 12 laps or more.
