sponsored by Bridgestone Tires
Committee Chair, Autocross events are an all-forward motion-driving-skill contest. Each driver is individually timed to the thousandth of a second, over a short, miniature road-course clearly defined using traffic cones. Cars compete one at a time, in a class with similar cars. An event can be held on any flat paved surface, usually a parking lot, or airport apron or runway.
Autocross emphasizes driver skill and vehicle handling rather than just speed. The corners are tight, and there are lots of them, so the driving is exciting and challenging. Autocross speeds do not exceed those normally encountered in highway driving. The skills you learn and practice here; smooth transitions, enhanced braking, and skid correction, will have an immediate impact on improving the safety and skill of your street driving. Autocross is an excellent way to teach car-control to young drivers in a safe environment. A day of autocrossing is far safer for both car and driver than most people's daily commute to work.
Autocross is also a very social sport, filled with some of the friendliest people you will ever meet. The camaraderie of the drivers is a special part of autocrossing that is profoundly satisfying.

Autocross (Ride and Handling) While it’s easy to understand why we did quarter-mile and hill-climb acceleration testing, some might wonder why we ran half-ton pickups through an autocross course. The answer is that we needed to push these trucks to the extreme to test their ride, handling and stability control capabilities in slalom conditions, hard stops, 90- and 180-degree turns, and rapid, tight maneuvers. This provided an idea of how the trucks might react to emergency or adverse road conditions. In a world where cars and crossovers are getting smaller, it’s best if you can avoid these vehicles in critical situations, not run over them. A minimum of three runs were carried out in each truck, unloaded, by the same driver, in two-wheel drive with traction control enabled. The quickest lap time determined the best-performing truck. The Silverado and F-150 tied for the best time and highest speed through the autocross, at 48.64 seconds and 30.21 mph. The Silverado’s handling was deemed excellent, with only mild oversteer at the apex of turns under hard braking. There was slight body roll in the corners, but less so than in most of the other pickups. The Silverado’s braking was both very responsive and very aggressive. Even though the Silverado has a 93-horsepower advantage and weighs 280 pounds less than the F-150, the F-150’s stability control system felt better tuned and dialed-in at all times. The F-150 handled similarly to the Silverado, but with less body roll and a stiffer ride. Braking was very responsive and powerful, but with lots of travel in the brake pedal. The F-150’s tires are slightly wider (275 mm versus 265 mm) than the Silverado’s, potentially giving the F-150 better grip around turns.

Do you think your hot rod handles pretty well? Put it to the test on the Ridetech Camaro Performers Magazine autocross course. The autocross is a low speed competition designed to highlight the handling, acceleration and braking of your ride. The wide sweepers, tight hairpins, chicanes and slalom sections of the course will keep your adrenaline pumping from start to finish. See below for classes, rules and safety requirements!

    PreReg for Nov 7 Open
At its most basic, SCCA can be described as a group of motorheads who enjoy competing our cars in events where we turn both right and left. We do this in a number of ways, ranging from the relatively low-speed Solo event (autocross), to full-bore road racing at close to 200 mph. What we do in Salina Region, however, is not the triple-digit aspect of SCCA – we are primarily an autocross club – but if road racing is your goal you can get there through us. SCCA is a national organization of more than 60,000 members. Salina Region is one of 112 individual Regions (local clubs). We are a small corner of SCCA, with a bit more than one tenth of one percent of that membership – about 80 members or so. But we put on some of the most enjoyable autocross events in Kansas. You don’t really need what may be considered a “sports car” to enjoy our car sports. Open roadsters are fun, but so are small and nimble sedans. To us, a Mustang or Camaro is a “big” car. Or, as a neighboring SCCA Region likes to say, “Every car is a sports car ... sometimes.” Site Hosted and Sponsored By

Have you ever wanted to test your car (and yourself) against the clock in a relatively safe, low-speed environment? Then autocrossing is for you. Cars run one at a time against the clock on a parking lot course marked by traffic cones. No previous experience is necessary; novices are welcome. All you need is a driver's license, an automotive helmet and a car that can pass a basic mechanical safety inspection we can even supply the helmet! Cars are run in classes against cars with similar performance. So whether you have a Yugo or a Ferrari, we have a class for you.
Willamette Motor Club puts on several autocrosses a year in the Salem area. In 2002, we combined these events, for the first time, into a championship series with year-end trophies for the class winners. For Series Event dates please see the Calendar
