In the backcountry, even a sprained ankle can become a life threatening injury if you aren't prepared to survive overnight in the snow. And of course, there is a real danger of getting injured or killed by an avalanche. Backcountry Ski Gear It is imperative that backcountry skiers are skilled in mountain travel, trained in wilderness first aid, carry avalanche safety gear and most importantly - know how to use it. Backcountry Skiing
By Tayloe M. Dubay eHow Contributor updated: August 7, 2009 I want to do this! What's This? Backcountry skiing is not for the novice skier. Undertaking a trip into the backcountry-where there are no boundaries and terrain is not patrolled by certified medical personnel-requires much skill and training. The potential risk of avalanche is so high that many backcountry skiers take classes and purchase the necessary equipment to save their lives before ever stepping foot out of bounds.
    Basics
  • Backcountry skiing is any skiing that takes places out of the designated boundaries of a ski resort. There are typically no lifts that access these areas. The terrain is untracked, unpatrolled and unmanaged, which provides its appeal and risk.
The backcountry provides the best skiing because the snow is fresher and deeper-undisturbed by the hordes of in-bounds skiers. Reaching the backcountry requires more effort, but if you know what you're doing, it's well worth it. There are a myriad of ways to reach the backcountry-either by foot, by ski, by guide or by helicopter. Contact your ski resort to inquire about your options.
