admin on December 22, 2008 Breckenridge CO United States 39° 29' 53.466" N 106° 2' 46.41" W Backcountry Skiing What is the terrain like... rolling? Trails? etc. (give me an idea/picture of what we will be facing) There are trails of varying degrees of climbing, rolling and access to ski terrain throughout the county. You can go out and kick and glide from the Gold Run Nordic Center (970.547.7889) up the Peabody Placer Rd (talk to folks at Gold Run Nordic Center). You can also do the Siberian Loop which is what you and I did. Access to that is from the Breckenridge Nordic Center and they’d give you the beta as well. This is a tough one to suggest terrain without knowing your ability. You can hang it out hard if you want or you can end up doing so without meaning to! I would suggest talking to the local shops: Mountain Outfitter’s in Breck (970.453.2201) or Wilderness Sports in Silverthorne (970.262.3875) for more guiding suggestions. Or call Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center 970.453.5633 Please understand that the winter backcountry in Co. is no place to be if you do not know what you are doing. It is almost impossible for a southerner that is not an expert skier and trained in snow science to truly be safe. With that said there are trail systems that are as safe as can be and you being respectful to the surroundings should be able to enjoy. Remember in the backcountry you cannot have any ego. No matter what you see others doing remember it is not a license for you to attempt the same, safely. Who knows what someone else knows. I was in a meeting last week in New Orleans with a man who is a trainer for backcountry travel and snow science and he said one thing that I will always remember. He said every weekend when I go out into the backcountry I see people doing things that are very dangerous. However as I said skinning into a hut that is in a safe area should be very fun and a wonderful experience.

Features patrol announcements, weather status, events calendar, avalanche information, and extensive membership details.
http://www.tbsp.org/
The Tahoe Backcountry Ski Patrol in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service provides information and assistance for backcountry travelers in the Tahoe National Forest and Humbolt-Toiyabe National Forest . TBSP also provides community education, basic and advanced avalanche and mountain travel/rescue training for ski patrollers, and winter Search and Rescue services in Northern California. Join us on patrol! Tahoe Backcountry Ski Patrol is a group of volunteers dedicated to helping make the Tahoe backcountry safer for everyone. We are all members of the National Ski Patrol, but instead of ski areas we patrol the public lands around Lake Tahoe and Truckee. We train all our members in emergency medicine, winter travel/survival, and search and rescue skills. There are currently over 50 skiers/riders on the patrol ranging in age from early 20s to early 60s and in ski ability from advanced intermediate to jaw-dropping rippers. TBSP patrollers get around on telemark or randonnee gear and on split-boards. We ski the backcountry together in groups of 3 or more every winter weekend from December to mid-April and respond to emergency calls via Forest Service dispatch. Tahoe Backcountry Ski Patrol is always looking for dedicated and enthusiastic winter backcountry lovers to join the patrol. TBSP is in search of folks willing to learn a new set of skills or two, while spending their weekends serving skiers, snowboarders and snowshoers that venture out into the mountains north of Tahoe. We invite anyone interested in learning more about the backcountry ski patrol to

Backcountry Skiing
Backcountry skiing is a term used for all kinds of skiing that is done in the wild, where there aren't any lifts, any circuit, any lodge, any patrol, or other comforts. It is the basic, just you, your ability, and nature. Backcountry Skiing is for more advanced Skiers only and you will need to have a lot more knowledge and other Skiing skills before you leave the safe environment that snow resorts create.
Backcountry skiing is one of the most pleasant, relaxing and rewarding activities of our lives. We enjoy the company of our friends, and we find the skiing to be incomparable in quality. We enjoy the terrain we ski through, and we enjoy the solitude that a little effort will bring.
Backcountry skiing gives you opportunity to enjoy the mountains. All the mountains in winter are ever changing and marvellous. The snow can be piled high on the mountains when the grass is still green. The adventurer needs to be independent, a good navigator, capable of skiing in many different snow conditions, and physically fit, as well as knowledgeable on how to stay warm in extreme cold.
The thrill of finding the perfect run and the persecution of virgin powder are what drive's the backcountry skier. There are no limits on where you can ski. Plus you inevitably find a run and make first tracks. This exaltation does come at a price. A backcountry skier always runs the hazard of getting lost, getting caught in an avalanche or getting hurt. Not to mention, it's possible to leap off a blind cornice, only to find the slope steeper than your skills can handle.
