Frequently Asked Questions about living barefoot. This FAQ answers those questions that both non-barefooters and new barefooters ask of barefooters all the time, from the basic (obvious) questions to those on foot health, care, and treatment, as well as those on how to deal with a mostly shod world. Establish a Sensuous Connection to Nature!

Make use of the sense of touch of the soles, for it is almost as highly developed as that of the hands! With animals and plants you may share the sensation of warmth and chill, the roughness of a dried-out ground or the freshness of reviving moisture.

Vibram Five Fingers Year 2002: Year 2003: Year 2008 and the Triathlete Influence: is a barefoot running action and logically more natural, this resistance is fascinating and deserves addressing. 3.   Arches:

  • Each engineered arch has a load limit.  Think of a hump-backed bridge with a load limitation sign.  A regular car can happily go over it.  A juggernaut would flatten it.  We will return to this concept later. An over-pronating, or collapsing foot makes a wider shape as the inside long arch (the medial longitudinal arch) flattens and is forced towards the ground.  Your bodyweight plus gravity being carried along the inside of the foot acts like the juggernaut over the hump-backed bridge, and is too much load for that structure.  The arch gives way, with loss of function.
Now, the trouble is, we all wear shoes.  Well, most of us, most of the time.  And modern day shoes have evolved into structures that limit the natural function of what they are wrapped around, and as Newton has taught us, for every action, there is a reaction.

    Barefooting
Mon, 07/31/2006 - 06:45 — Tim Manners "It's not you and a million dollars of research and development spent on water skis," says Brian Henney, who prefers to go water-skiing without any skis, as reported by Jennifer Bleyer in The New York Times (7/28/06). "It's just what Mother Nature gave you. Hold on to the rope and let's go," says Brian, adding: "The thrill is that you're on your own feet and you're going 40 miles per hour." Wheee! It's a thrill called " barefooting " that dates back to "Florida in the 1940s" and is still going strong today: "A tournament called Footstock draws about 150 skiers and 2,000 spectators to Peshtigo Lake in Crandon, Wis., every August for a weekend of barbecues, fish fries, camping and figure-eight-style barefooting."

I am often asked about the best way to breathe when you run.  Should you breathe through the nose or the mouth?  Should the breaths be long and deep or short and rapid?  To be honest I have not paid all that much attention to breathing while running.  Through the forums over at the Barefoot Runners Society I found myself in the midst of a few discussions about running and breathing, which led me to consider the subject more than I ever really thought I would, and I thought it a good idea to share.

... GALLOWAY RUNNING VIDEO I was sent the link above by my friend Matt Hester, who is running the Goofy Challenge with me this year.  The link contains four videos presented by former Olympic marathoner Jeff Galloway.  I have followed and believed in Mr. Galloway’s methods for years, and I was very impressed and excited when I heard this past September that he was signed on as the official running adviser for Disney race events.

Race report: Diamond in the Rough Triathlon 2010
A quick race report I tapped out on my phone for my friends last weekend (July 10). With apologies to Remy Charlip
Unfortunately, when I walked out of my hotel this morning for the Diamond in the Rough triathlon in Perryville, Maryland along the beautiful Susquehanna river, it was quite wet out.
Fortunately, the AM forecast was just for scattered showers, with no thunderstorms until the afternoon. We got to the race site with no problems.
Unfortunately, I was now going to have to bike with somewhat used legs instead of just used arms.
Fortunately, I continued to feel strong and powered up the inclines pretty well (for me). I experimented with going a little more anaerobic than I usually do. After all, this was no Ironman
Unfortunately, my bike time was around 1:16. I was hoping with how good I felt it would be even faster. Maybe the rain, which never once let up, and became quite a downpour during much of the bike, was a factor. I had to really squint to see in the rain and had to be super careful on all the turns - there were sheets of water on the road in many places, sometimes several inches deep.
Unfortunately, I still managed to forget one of those two things and started to run out of the transition with my helmet on and had to turn around.  I thought, "I bet that just cost me my #1 spot!"
