Barefooting
Michael J. Rosen "If a Blister or Cut Opens on the Bottom of an Athlete's Foot, Glue it Shut Now to Finish Skiing and Deal With the Stitches Later." - from the American Barefoot Club official Web site. Walking barefoot on the beach provides that ineffable carefree feeling. Removing your shoes before entering a mosque shows respect. Ditching your boots before entering someone's home that's decorated with expensive white Berber carpeting suggests that you like fussy friends who don't own dogs. But to water ski without skis can only prove how much better you think you are than everyone else on land and sea. (Go ahead, do it on one foot! Pull a 360! Prove the point!) Barefoot skiing , self-satisfyingly known simply as barefooting , got its feet wet in Florida in the 40s and 50s, a full decade before Australia began holding national competitions. The first World Championships were held in 1978-the very year Volkswagen stopped manufacturing Beetles and the first cell phones were introduced. Uncanny! Those in the mood to kick off their shoes-skis, really-compete in three different events:

It’s something that’s getting a lot of media attention - How We're Wrecking Our Feet With Every Step We Take New York Magazine - and there are a ton of organizations, websites, and discussion groups devoted to it. They claim that we ‘shoddies’ move wrong. I went around barefoot to overcome some IT band and calf troubles, which is how I came to learn about this weird little niche group. I plan to keep walking around barefoot because it feels pretty good. My question is should I go the next step and attempt barefoot running, which seems to be akin to Nirvana for barefooters. What are your thoughts on shod vs. unshod running?

51. The Critical Eye | Barefoot Gen
Overview of the film and related links.
http://5x5media.com/eye/film/barefoot.shtml
Barefoot Gen Proof that animation is every bit as powerful as any other medium for telling us about real-life horror Barefoot Gen
Directed by Mamoru Shinzaki
Japan, 1983 I was first introduced to Gen in the summer of 1985. While browsing for mutants at the comic book store, I happened upon a translated manga, an issue of Barefoot Gen . In it, Keiji Nakazawa, through the character of Gen Nakaoka, related the story of his surviving the bombing of Hiroshima.
Nakazawa's plan wasand still isan ambitious one: to help make sure that what happened at Hiroshima never happens again, anywhere. How? By telling his story in manga form, and having his work translated in various languages and kept in print ( Barefoot Gen was first serialized in 1973; in collected form, it spans about 2,000 pages.)
The movie, a condensed retelling of the manga, was released in Japanese cinemas years ago, and only recently released domestically on video by Streamline and Orion Home Video, along with a limited theatrical release.
Gen is the second youngest child in a poor Japanese family. The movie opens shortly before the dropping of the bomb, with the family hungry for food as their rations dwindle. Enduring this and other wartime hardships, the family is still happy, secure in their love for one another.

Welcome to the NSWBWSC. Our Club currently operates from the banks of the Georges River at Helles Park in Moorebank (near Liverpool) New South Wales. Our site has been home to many of our sports current and previous Australian and World Champions including Dodd Dwyer, John Pennay, Robert Blaauw, Brenton Crouch, Nathan Forge, Tim Failes, Gavan Beattie, Gizzie Hallasz, Donna Schmidt and Colleen Thompson (formerly Wilkinson). Our Club has a proud history of producing exceptional skiers as we are lucky enough to have access to one of the best wind protected stretches of water in the world for Barefoot Waterskiing. The site as it is today was discovered by Nick Hunt and Graeme Dwyer. The early days were tough; there was a lot of red tape to get the site compliant, including the removal of rubbish and dumped cars from the river, so it was safe enough to ski. A boat ramp and club house were erected to store our boats and equipment. The forefathers of this club which include the likes of Graeme Dwyer, Nick Hunt and Sam Pace laid a great platform for the future growth and success of the Club. In 1994 the worlds best barefooters converged on Moorebank and we hosted our first World Championships. Local Champ John Pennay eventually took out the Overall and Trick title and dominated a star studded field which included the likes of Ron Scarpa, Lane Bowers and Brett Sands. Moorebank hosted the World Championships again in 1998. We have also hosted a number of National and Asian Australisian Championships and we are lucky enough to be hosting the 2010 Nationals April 6th to 11th.

Barefoot Bay
Located in south Brevard, Barefoot Bay is primarily comprised of retirees and senior citizens. Approximately 8,300 residents live in this riverside community, which is only a short drive from Sebastian Inlet. Because of its location, Barefoot Bay has excellent fishing and recreational opportunities. Established in 1969, this unique community provides its residents with activities and events year-round. Whether it's dances, horseshoes, water aerobics, or just hanging out by the pool, Barefoot Bay's residents are always on the move. A centrally located community center is the hub of activity while an 18-hole, par-60 golf course provides additional outdoor recreation possibilities. DEMOGRAPHICS Residents of Barefoot Bay typically fall into the "Senior Sun Seekers" demographic group: retirees, who are married without children. Nearly a third are single-person households. Their money often comes from Social Security, interest, dividends and pensions and they rank high for investments and savings. Most of their income is disposable. They own single-family or manufactured homes in newer or established neighborhoods that include seasonal housing for snowbirds. Many keep busy playing golf, traveling, and playing cards as well as fishing, boating, swimming, and enjoying community-based, planned activities such as dances, horseshoes, and shuffleboard tournaments.
