The acronym "B.A.S.E." was coined by film-maker Carl Boenish , his wife Jean Boenish, Phil Smith, and Phil Mayfield. Carl was the real catalyst behind modern BASE jumping, and in 1978 he filmed the first BASE jumps to be made using ram-air parachutes and the freefall tracking technique (from El Capitan , in Yosemite National Park ). While BASE jumps had been made prior to that time, the El Capitan activity was the effective birth of what is now called BASE jumping. BASE jumping is significantly more dangerous than similar sports such as

BASE is an acronym that stands for BUILDING / ANTENNA / SPAN / EARTH. It is a sport that is truly considered EXTREME by every measure of the word. The sport takes the skills learned from Skydiving
Special equipment and modifications allow jumpers to safely exit from objects as low as 300 feet or lower and land without injury. Freefalls can last anywhere from one second to over a minute depending on the height of the object being jumped from. It is truly an amazing sight to watch a BASE jumper leap from a tall building in a crowded city, open his/her parachute safely, then land with precession accuracy on the streets below.
BASE jumping for years was an underground sport. Although not as illegal as many people thought, jumpers sometimes trespassed in order to get the altitude they needed to make a safe jump. Today BASE jumping is an accepted sport in many countries around the world. Some countries actually invite BASE jumpers to their cities in order to gain world recognition through the publicity the BASE jumpers generate.

History
There are isolated examples of BASE jumps dating from the early 1900s. Frederick Law jumped from the Statue of Liberty in 1912; Michael Pelky and Brian Schubert jumped the cliff " El Capitan " in Yosemite Valley in 1966; and in 1976, Rick Sylvester jumped Canada 's Mt Asgard for the opening sequence of the James Bond movie " The Spy Who Loved Me ", giving the wider world its first look at BASE jumping. However, these and other sporadic incidents were one-off experiments, not the systematic pursuit of a new form of parachuting. The acronym "BASE" was coined by film-maker Carl Boenish, who in 1978 filmed the first jumps from El Capitan to be made using ram-air parachutes and freefall tracking technique, which effectively defines modern BASE jumping. These jumps were repeated, not as a publicity exercise or as a movie stunt, but as a true recreational activity. It was this which popularised BASE jumping more widely among parachutists. Boenish continued to publish films and informational magazines on BASE jumping until his 1984 death on a cliff jump in

BASE jumping is without a doubt my favorite sport in the world. If I had to give up all other activities and keep only one, it would be BASE.
http://www.troyhartman.com/base_jumping.htm
BASE jumping is without a doubt my favorite sport in the world. If I had to give up all other activities and keep only one, it would be BASE. The feeling you get when you leap off of a stationary object is like nothing else in the world. Nothing. You are jumping into dead space, with absolutely no noise or wind resistance. Since the jump starts from a standstill, you experience the full effect of acceleration toward terminal velocity. This is entirely different from jumping out of a noisy airplane that already has velocity and is creating wind resistance. Don't get me wrong. Jumping out of an airplane still feels incredible, but just cannot touch a fixed object exit. BASE stands for four different types of objects: Building, Antenna, Span, or Earth. Span is just a nifty word for bridge or cable car. I have by far most of my jumps off of a bridge (probably 150 or so), followed by Earth (cliffs) and only a handful of jumps off of buildings and antennas. I don't like antennas (AM/FM towers) only because of the harmful radiation effect and voltage zaps you get from climbing around on them. Buildings are a rush because you have to sneak into them, get elevator access (or climb stairs, which sucks) and then usually trip some sort of alarm getting on the roof. So you have to be geared up in the stairwell and ready to jump right away. Then, once you land, you need a getaway car ready to blaze out of there, fast. Cliff jumps are my favorite because you have to hike your ass off and you get to hang out in beautiful places.

A personal view
The first time I had heard of El Capitan, more than fifteen years ago, was not from another climber, but from a French army officer of the Air Force Fusilliers Commandos . He was traveling to California and couldn't pass up on the opportunity. He hiked by himself in the afternoon to the top of the mountain, waited a few hours into the night, and jumped and landed in the dark without any fear. Aftewards, he had a custom T-shirt made, and was amused to see how some American skydivers seemed outraged. BASE jumping refers to the four general types of structures from which people jump: Buildings, Antennas, Spans (bridges) and Earth (cliffs). It is the most extreme form of skydiving because altitudes can be ridiculously low, the objects themselves represent a hazard, and landing areas can be quite small. Of course, the more extreme it is, the more it attracts some people. At one point, I looked seriously into it, but fortunately :-) I was distracted by other pursuits. The sport really begin in earnest in 1978, when freefall photographer Carl Boenish led a group of jumpers to El Capitan's summit and produced a spectacular short film of their skydives. The film inspired jumpers to visit Yosemite Valley and NPS, not knowing how to

Introduction
There is likely no more effective way to flush the system with adrenaline than with a BASE jump. BASE, for the uninitiated, is an acronym for building, antenna, span, and environment. In other words, the four elements from which a BASE jump may commence. The first two have an obvious meaning. Span and environment are bridges and, essentially, cliffs. (For a history of the sport, click here One would imagine that such a risk-prone activity would spawn a fair amount of litigation. However, a review of the Lexis database reveals very few cases that have arisen out of BASE jumping activities. This article will analyze those cases and attempt to discover any common threads.
The Basics of BASE
I do not, strictly speaking, have any BASE jumping experience. I have made more than 100 skydives, which is actually quite an unimpressive number in real skydiving circles. The closest I have ever come to a BASE jump was a skydive I made from an ultralight over Western Java back in 2001.
