We have changed our schedule to Thursdays: 6pm at Holmes Court. I think its a good idea that we have only one day of scheduled polo per week. Thanks for keeping this together, Stephen.

What should I bring?
A bicycle and some refreshments are most important.
An old mountain bike is a fine way to start. Cruisers and single speeds are fine. Road bike drop bars are not recommended. The game involves a lot of quick starts/stops. We've always got extra mallets for newcomers. Come check it out.

Bike polo, in action Photo courtesy of Hu Totya and Wikipedia Commons User-Submitted Article Bicycle polo was invented in the late 1800's, but it has only recently taken off as a popular alternative sport. Bike polo rules vary regionally and are up to interpretation, but the list provided here should get you started with this fascinating sport. Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
Things You'll Need:
  • A field with goals Bicycles Mallets Small ball
The field or court (some prefer to play on concrete, others grass) should be about the size of a hockey rink or basketball court with goals at either end. Goals can be as simple as two heavy objects acting as goalposts. Create two teams of three or four players. Each player should be riding a bicycle and holding a polo mallet. The mallets needn't be official; create one with a broom handle or other household goods. Play with a single ball that matches the difficulty level of the players. (The smaller the ball, the harder it will be to control).

This highly irregular event was not without its consequences owing to the damage caused to the croquet gear and to the Station Bicycles which had been purloined for the game from all corners of the camp! Bicycle polo was played on Saturday afternoons on the Officers Mess lawn after the usual lunchtime p-up. Spokes were broken and Warrant Officer Dale, the SWO , as Station bicycle inventory holder put in a complaint because of the damage done to his precious bikes.
Mick Ryan
can remember this pastime as well, five years later. It was mainly played using the RAF issue German Batwomen's bicycles which were stored in the Officers' Barrack Blocks while they were at work. The Officers' Mess Lawn Croquet mallets were used with a croquet ball. Unfortunately competition used to get very fierce. When all else failed a particularly effective way of stopping your opponents was to reverse your mallet and, holding it by the head, stick the handle through the front wheel spokes. Depending on the speed, this would strip out all the spokes, and the front forks would stick in the lawn, resulting in a spectacular unseating of the enemy by a somersault over the handlebars.

Three, two, one… POLO!
September 13th, 2010 by Stacey Panek
The grown-up on the lime-green bike, decked out with matching green wheel disks, hollers, “Three, two, one…POLO,” and two groups of three kids, facing each other across the pavement, wobble forth on their bikes. Why are they wobbling? Because they’re also carrying long mallets. They’ll use these mallets to maneuver a small ball toward goals made of orange pylons set one bike width apart. The kids are playing bicycle polo for the first time, led by bike polo enthusiast Matt Messenger, the guy on the lime-green bike. This is day three of Cascade’s Urban Riders summer camp for ten- to thirteen-year-olds. After learning the basics of riding in traffic on Monday and whizzing around the Marymoor Park velodrome on Tuesday, the campers are now getting coached in the rules and requisite skills of polo. They’ve learned, for example, that a hardcourt bike polo court is about the size of a tennis court and that there are two ways of using the handmade mallets, which are shaped like croquet mallets. You can shuffle the ball down the court with the wide end of the stick or shoot using the smaller surface area at the front of the mallet. You have to shoot to score. If you make a goal using the wide end of your mallet, I’m sorry—it doesn’t count.
