Blind Cricket in the UK
Blind Cricket has been played in England and Wales since the 1940's. The founding members of British Blind Sport (BBS) were cricketers. The sport offers camaraderie and a chance to compete on equal terms for blind and partially sighted people. The England and Wales Cricket Board oversea's blind cricket in the UK but BBS and Blind Cricket England and Wales (BCEW) are the organisations who are responsible for the day to day running of the sport including making rules and doing development work. All players are registered blind or partially sighted. Of the eleven players in the team, at least four must be totally blind. BBS seeks to encourage young cricketers to participate and develop their skills in the game. RNIB New College, Worcester and the Royal National College for the Blind (RNC), Hereford both have teams and there is an annual junior competition called the Kersey Cup held at Lord's.
BBS run the domestic Cup competition with BCEW running the league.
In 2008 the BCEW Nemesys blind cricket league will comprise of 7 teams: Birmingham, London, Metro, Northants, South Wales, Sussex and Warwickshire. For more details on the league

Blind Cricket
PITCH BLACK (Seeing blind cricket is believing in the human spirit) (c) David Astle Shut your eyes and listen to the clues around you. The tingle of bells, the rush of air, a wooden crack, the yells and pounding of feet. This is no ordinary clamour. “Bowler,” yells the bowler. “Keeper,” yells the keeper. The bowler adjusts his aim. He’s a genteel bloke in a cable-knit sweater, his eyes like wet pumice. He calls a second time. The keeper responds. “Ready?” asks the bowler and the blind batsman is ready. “Play,” says Ian Walsh, the bowler, releasing the ball in a whippy underarm, rolling an oversized cat-ball rattling down the pitch. Not far away, a metre behind the wicketkeeper, stands a giant albino called Chris who “calls” the ball for Curralejo. With B3 vision, between stone-blind and less than 10 per cent sight, Chris Stevens can see enough to call “leg side!” and Curralejo contorts his body accordingly. In one fluid swat he sweeps the ball off his toes, sending it jingling towards the fine-leg boundary. The biggest crunch comes down to categories. While the 43 blokes (and one girl) charging around Kooyong’s two mini-ovals are all legally blind, some are blinder than others.

Illawarra Vision Impaired Cricket Club
CHECK THIS OUT!!!!! CLICK HERE Blind Cricket in New South Wales has traditionally been played in Sydney, and has rarely ventured beyond the boundaries of the Greater Sydney metropolitan area. The Illawarra region has produced some of the finest young talent the game has ever seen, and is currently home to many of the NSW super stars. The "Illawarra Vision Impaired Cricket" team, better known as IVIC, was established on the 5 th of August 2006. Thus far, the Illawarra club has had a 100% success rate, having only played one game, and crushing Sydney in a historic defeat by 10 runs during a friendly match of Indoor Blind Cricket. The Illawarra players and officials hold their heads high, and proudly march towards victory in 2007. IVIC has formally made application for affiliated membership with the NSWBCA, and hopes to register in the NSW State Shield competition, commencing in 2007/2008, where they will compete against other regional teams such as Canberra and Sydney. Currently, IVIC is in negotiations with Wollongong Council to find a permanent home ground for next year. The North Wollongong Indoor Sports Centre has kindly provided its high quality facilities for IVIC's training and Indoor competitions. The Illawarra Vision Impaired Cricket team is proudly sponsored by Truss-T-Frames, who continue their wonderful ongoing support and generous contributions towards the game of Blind Cricket. The IVIC uniforms and official logo were designed by the Logo Man. IVIC's equipment has been graciously donated by the Primary Club of Australia, who have heartwarmingly provided Blind Cricket across the nation with greatly appreciated financial assistance.

Blind Cricket
Last Updated: 2010-11-01 Blind Cricket is a special version of the game adapted for blind and partially sighted players. Blind cricket was invented in Melbourne in 1922. The world's first sports ground and clubhouse for blind people was developed at Kooyong, Melbourne in 1928 and is still used today as the home of the VBCA. Cricket for the blind has also been played since the early 1920s in the United Kindgom. The founding members of the British Blind Sport organization were cricketers, and the association is the administrative body for the sport within the United Kingdom. All players are registered blind or partially sighted, and of the eleven players in the team, at least four must be totally blind. Many clubs play friendly matches against sighted teams and give demonstrations of the game during the lunch intervals of Test Cricket Matches. The rules of blind cricket are based on the standard laws of cricket with a few modifications. Teams are composed of players from up to five different sight categories B1, low partial, B2, B3 and B4. B1 is totally blind and the sight categories then move upwards in levels of sight. Each sight category is subject to different rules and compensations in order to make the playing field as level as possible. The pitch is made of concrete and measures the same length and width as used in sighted cricket. The boundaries are measured 40 metres in a circle around the pitch and indicated by a white line with flags set at intervals.

cricket BLIND CRICKET Blind cricket is very similar to cricket played by the sighted. The main difference being that the ball is bowled under arm and makes an audible noise that can be heard by the players. Traditionally this game is played between two teams of eleven players made up of players with sight varying from totally blind to those with partial sight and is generally played on a one day basis with 40 overs per side and everyone is encouraged to participate either with bat or ball. That is traditionally though, and the above is used at an international level. In recent times we have moved into the shorter Twenty/20 version of the game which can be over in 2 or 3 hours maximum. Still played similar to the traditional version of blind cricket, the only differences being the game is only 20 overs a side, boundaries are shorter and you can play with as little as 7 players a side. National Tournaments aren't so common anymore. We hold a Twenty/20 tournament over Easter weekend and are working towards developing a summer series of either Twenty/20 or the traditional game. The World Blind Cricket Council adminsters the game on an international basis and due to the NZBCA's affiliation with this governing body are able to participate in international competitions such as the Blind Cricket World Cups and test matches against other countries.

      About Blind Cricket
While this form of cricket has somewhat declined in players over the past five years in New Zealand that has started to change as recent as last year with the introduction of the shorter 20/20 version of the game and annual tournaments.
      About the game
As players have very limited sight or no sight at all the game has been adapted and is sound focussed rather then visual. While the objectives are the same as able bodied cricket we tend to focus more on the shortened 20/20 version of the game as a preference to the longer but more traditional version. The umpires control a lot of the game with voice commands and there are modifications to the ball, stumps and very slightly to the pitch.
      The Players and Teams
All players must have an official sight grading certificate as approved by the World Blind cricket Council (WBCC) which must be completed by an authorised optometrist or ophthalmologist. As there are so many different eye conditions there are three main categories for which anyone wishing to play blind cricket will need to be fitted into depending on their vision loss:
      The Ball
This is the main adaptation enabling this game to be played. There are currently several types of balls used around the world for blind cricket ranging from a size 5 soccer ball with bells inside to various cricket sized balls which have varying abilities to make noise when bowled. The ball that is currently used in New Zealand is the ball from the 2006 Blind Cricket World Cup in Pakistan. It is made from hard plastic and is filled with several washers/bearings that move around inside it to create a noise. It is generally white in colour to allow those with some vision to pick up the contrast against the pitch. It is the closest thing to an actual cricket ball available in both size and weight. It has a similar sound to a maraca (musical instrument) when moving.

Home Blind Cricket 25 April 2005 Premier Dipuo Peters will accompany the Minister of Sport, Makhenkesi Stofile at the final game of Blind Cricket which will be held in Kimberley. Blind cricket is becoming one of the most popular sports for the blind in the country since it was introduced in 1997. A National Team has already competed on an international platform in 1998 and won the World Cup. The sport which started with only two teams has developed to sixteen teams. A National Tournament is held annually with the event rotating to each province as a host. The Premier expressed her exhilaration and enthusiasm that the 2005 National Tournament will be held in Kimberley. Premier is elated at the announcement that BLIND CRICKET SOUTH AFRICA won the bid to host the 2006 World Cup. The Premier’s attendance is to demonstrate and acknowledge the role and contribution of cricket in nation-building within the province and the country as a whole. Premier Peters is fully supporting the Griqualand West Cricket Board in its quest to advance the aspirations of the people of the province in the transformation and development of the sport in the province. Premier Peters calls on the people of the province and other stakeholders to fully support the initiative to establish a local professional team in the province.
