Men's bobsled has been on the Winter Games program for a long time, a women's event was only added in 2002.
    Trivia
    • America's bobsleigh team, led by Billy Fiske, won the gold at the 1932 Lake Placid Games. The team included Eddie Eagan, who was a boxing champion in the 1920 Games. Eagan remains the only person to have won gold medals in both the Summer and Winter Games. The Game sheld in Squaw Valley 1960 became the only Winter Games ever not to include bobsledding, as the organizing committee refused to build an expensive bobsled run for the mere nine nations that would use it. In 1988, Jamaica entered its first bobsled team, finishing last. However, they did inspire a Hollywood film called Cool Runnings . (see video of the originals) In 2002, USA's Vonetta Flowers became the first black athlete to earn a winter games gold medal, doing so in the women's bobsleigh.

Did You Know? It's been 18 years since the Jamaican bobsled team made its debut at the Olympics. Immortalized in the Disney movie Cool Runnings , the team has finished 29th, 34th, 14th, 21st, and 28th. An offspring of tobogganing, the modern-day sport of bobsledding was conceived in Switzerland late in the 1800s. Each nation may enter a maximum of two sleds in each event. The sleds are made of fiberglass and must adhere to strict size and weight restrictions. A driver steers the sled by pulling one rope with his right hand to go right or a separate rope with his left hand to go left. The second member of the two-person team is the brakeman. Always the last person in the sled, he or she pulls up on the brake, lowering a piece of metal into the ice to stop the sled after the run. To round out a four-man team a pair of pushers are added. They are responsible for helping to get the sled started.

Teamwork, agility and breathtaking speeds best define the sport in which two or four-member bobsled teams push together to start down the straights - only to face some of the sharpest turns in sport at speeds of up to 135 km/h (84 mph).
Bobsleighing (or bobsledding as it is known in the U.S.) began in Switzerland as a gentleman's pursuit among the rich at 19th century ski resorts - the most famous of them at St. Moritz where the first bobsled club was formed in 1897 Development of official rules and experimentation with different tracks eventually led to the sport being recognized at the 1924 Olympics at Chamonix . Two-man teams were introduced at the Lake Placid games in 1932.
Further development of the sport came with the imposition of weight limits on individual bobsled team members, and as fiberglass replaced the wooden sleds to increase speeds.

It marked the first four-man gold medal since the Winter Games of 1948. Helped by track records in the opening two heats on Saturday, Holcomb, with crew members Justin Olsen, Steve Mesler and Curt Tomasevicz on the brakes came to the 16-turn track Sunday with a .4 of a second lead over Canada’s Lyndon Rush and .44 ahead of German icon Andre Lange. Holcomb, in the Bo-Dyn Night Train bobsled that captured the world championship one year ago, extended the advantage to .45 with the best third run. With no troubles on the fast and treacherous course, the Night Train safely negotiated its way to the third best final leg and wound up defeating Lange by .38 of a second. Rush, second through the first three runs, was overtaken by Lange in the finale and placed another .01 behind and in the bronze medal position.

Located on Blackcomb Mountain, the 4,757-foot track was completed in December 2007 after two-and-a-half years of construction at a cost of about $105 million.
