Bobsleigh
Origins The sport of Bobsleigh was invented in the late 1860s by an Englishman. It is a winter time sport in which a team make timed runs down narrow, twisting, banked, iced tracks in a gravity-powered sled.
The Bobsleigh Run at Calgary, Canada.
Originally teams consisted of five or six members and two crestas were attached together with a board and a mechanism for steering attached to the front of the sleigh. The sleds are now of ultra modern fibre glass and metal design rather than wood and teams consist of either either four or two members. It was the visionary and wealthy hotel owner Caspar Badrutt who created the first natural “half-pipe” track. Built in the 1870s, this track is still in use today and has hosted two Olympics. Caspar Badrutt's vision and marketing efforts, coupled with the curiosity of English tourists and the idea of “winter resorting” led to adaptations of sleds created for recreational use. This resulted in the head first skeleton, luge and bobsleighs. Originally racing was done on snow covered roads. Since this time tracks have evolved from straight runs into ones with exhilerating twist and turns. The first formal competition was held in 1884 and the first club formed in 1897.

Bobsleigh is a sport that is contested in two- and four-person teams. The team stuffs themselves into the narrow, cramped bobsleigh for a fast, turn-filled ride down an ice tube. Bobsleigh tracks are at least 1500 meters long and must have up to 15 curves. Speeds up to 13 kmh are common. The bobsleigh event made its debut in the first Winter Olympics, in 1924. Sleighs then were made of wood, with steel runners. Today's sleighs are made of light metals. The greater the weight, the faster the run is the principle, although rules specify a weight limit. Women began competing in the bobsleigh in 2002. The competition involves four "runs" down the ice tube (two for women). The lowest total time wins. The bobsleigh crew is made up of a pilot and brakeman. Four-person crews have two "pushers," who help propel the machine. The start is from a strict stand-still, and the crew pushes the machine up to 50 meters to the starting line.

At the start of Bobsleigh, the Wii Remote is shaken up and down at a fast pace. Then, as soon as "A" appears on-screen, A is pressed. For the rest of the race, the game is played with the Wii remote being tilted left-to-right, which steer's the bobsleigh in that direction (player's must tilt the Wiimote in rhythm in multi-player). Another critical thing in the game is to keep the bobsleigh in the golden path; this will increase the speed continuously, which will end the course faster.

The bobsleigh track was built in La Plagne thanks to the enthusiasm of the Bobsleigh club in Macot, an area of La Plagne itself. The bobsleigh club in Macot was the only club in the Savoie region which still had active members. They used the old mining track in La Plagne to organise bob competitions on the road.

About the Sport
The three Olympic sliding sports are bobsleigh , skeleton and luge. All three grew out of the practice of using a sled or toboggan — a light, narrow wooden platform on runners — to slide on snow or ice. In winter, using a sled to travel and have fun dates back some 700 years. The idea of racing sleds down a steep and twisting track dates back about 150 years, to the mid-19th century, when British tourists began tobogganing on the snowbound roads of the Alps. The four-man bobsleigh was on the program of the first Olympic Winter Games in 1924, in Chamonix , France. The two-man bobsleigh event joined the Olympic Games program in 1932. Women began competing in bobsleigh for the first time in 2002, at the Salt Lake City Olympic Winter Games How It Works Today’s bobsleigh is built to be fast and aerodynamic, with a rounded fibreglass nose and four highlypolished steel runners. To start, the racers push off as fast as they can for approximately 50 metres, then jump into the bobsleigh for a seated descent down the track. The driver steers down the track, while, at the end of the run, the brakeman stops the sled. There are three Olympic bobsleigh events: the men compete in two -and four -man bobsleigh and women in a two -person format.
