Quote from the movie Cool Runnings. About the Sport The four-man bobsleigh was on the program of the first Olympic Winter Games in 1924, in Chamonix, France. The two-man bobsleigh event joined the Olympic Games program in 1932. Women began competing in bobsleigh for the first time in 2002, at the Salt Lake City Olympic Winter Games.

      Bobsleigh
Bobsleigh was invented by a group of English men on holiday in Switzerland in 1890. Their aim was to create a sled that could carry two or more people down a snow-covered road between St Moritz and Celerina. The new sport immediately caught on and a special track, complete with banked curves, made of ice, was constructed next to the road in 1902. The first races were for 5 and 6 people and a requirement of the competition was that each crew included at least one woman. This requirement was dropped in the 1930s and the disciplines altered to 2 and 4 man events. It has been part of the official programme since the First Olympic Winter Games in Chamonix, with the four-man and two-man events being added in 1932. Two-women Bobsleigh was a new event introduced in Salt Lake City 2002.

The first races were run on snow-covered roads. The first club was formed in 1897 and the first purpose-built track was opened in 1902. Initially the sled teams were of five or six, this was reduced to two- or four-person sleighs in the 1930s. Ancient sleighs were wood; modern sleighs combine light metals, steel runners, and an aerodynamic composite body. Competition sleighs must be a maximum of 3.80 m long (4-crew) or 2.70 m long (2-crew), both have a maximum width of 0.67 m.

Buy our Jamaicans.com Bobsled T-shirt Now!!! Fourteen years ago the first Jamaican Bobsleigh team made history in the Calgary Olympics Winter Games. They warmed the hearts of many worldwide in their first attempt at Olympic glory and was even immortalized in the popular Walt Disney movie "Cool Runnings". Since then the team has been a mainstay in the Winter Olympics and now have their eyes focused on bringing back a medal to Jamaica. In the first games (1988) the team was seen as a novelty as they had many technically difficulties, injuries and crashes. In the second games (1992) the team had drastically improved. They had practiced hard for 4 years and were confident and focused. The 4-man team came in 14th ahead of the US, French, Russian and Italians teams. This was just the beginning. In the 2-man event the Jamaican team shocked the world by beating the Swedish national champions and coming in 10th place. The team has continued to improve and took in 2000, and took gold at the World Push Championships in Monte Carlo in three events and posting the fasted start time at the World Cup.
