It is often called a blood sport by its detractors but followers of the spectacle regard it as a fine art and not a sport as there are no elements of competition in the proceedings. In Portugal it is illegal to kill a bull in the arena, so it is removed and slaughtered in the pens as fighting bulls can only be used once. A nonlethal variant stemming from Portuguese influence is also practised on the Tanzanian island of Pemba The tradition, as it is practised today, involves professional

    Bullfighting
Tweet Bullfighting pits a bull against men wielding barbed spikes, spears, swords and daggers. During the fight the bull is tormented, weakened and brought to its knees by a variety of spears, spikes and daggers. These weapons inflict incredible pain and the distressed bull is weakened by blood loss. After around 15 minutes of extreme suffering, the matador finally kills the exhausted bull, before it is dragged out of the arena. Considered an ‘art form’ by its dwindling number of supporters, bullfighting takes place in several European countries and parts of Latin America. WSPA believes that cultural heritage is no excuse for cruelty, and that this violent form of animal abuse should be banned worldwide.

    Bullfighting
Why are bullfights cruel? Most bullfights last for about 15 minutes, with a series of deliberately vicious stages. The bull is taunted and stabbed with a variety of spears, barbed spikes and daggers. These weapons are designed to inflict intense pain and cause blood loss to weaken the animal. After this period of suffering, the Matador finally kills the exhausted and dying bull. Many bulls die drowning in their own blood because the Matador's inaccuracy often pierces their lungs instead of the heart. Achievements to date
    • August 2010 - Catalonia votes to ban bullfighting in the region January 2007 - the last bullring in Barcelona, Spain, is due to close from lack of public interest. June 2005 - The towns of Lloret de May and Girona closed their bullrings April 2005 - Bill to ban bullfighting proposed in Catalan Parliament in April 2005
Catalonia makes history by banning bullfights
"The funding that WSPA provides keeps IBBR (Idaho Black Bear Rehibilitation) going, but it’s far more than that. Working in animal protection and rehabilitation is hard, but I always know WSPA will be there for encouragement and support in so many other ways. I never feel like I am in this alone."
