Ride Lonesome
The Bullfighting Budd Boetticher
feature by Sean Axmaker , 14 December 2001 When Budd Boetticher, the last of the old Hollywood two-fisted directors, died on November 27, 2001, his passing was barely noted. The old-fashioned studio pro with an independent streak, a colorful history, and a filmography largely forgotten by modern critics had been inactive for decades, his last Hollywood credit on the script for the 1970 Two Mules For Sister Sara . Only Todd McCarthy, the chief film critic at Variety and their resident keeper of the film history flame, offered a worthy obituary. Chalk it up to the short memory of critical hive-mind. His rich cycle of Randolph Scott westerns of the 1950s number among the greatest westerns ever made, but apart from the occasional TV showing (which does great disservice to his two gorgeous CinemaScope productions) those films are rarely seen, and his seminal 1956 film, Seven Men From Now was effectively missing-in-action for decades. That all seemed to change just a year ago, when Seven Men Seven Men They can lick you (which they cant) or they can fire you, and once you know that youre not afraid of anybody.

Bullfighting
Bullfighting aficionados claim that the bullfight is a battle to the death in which either participant, bull or matador may die. In reality, before the match even starts, the bull doesn't have a fighting chance to win.
Before the fight begins, bulls languish in pens that lack sunlight, food, and water. They are commonly fed laxatives or drugs to debilitate them. In fact, scientists from Spain's Salamanca University found that one in five bulls had been given anti-inflammatory drugs, which could disguise injuries that could weaken the animals' strength prior to fighting. They are also stabbed in the backs before release into the arena.
A traditional bullfight consists of three stages. During the first stage, picadors, men atop heavily padded, blindfolded horses, approach the bull and drive pics into his neck muscles to begin the flow of blood to weaken the bull. The banderillos come next, working on foot to place "their banderillas (brightly adorned, barbed sticks) in the bull's shoulders in order to lower its head for the eventual kill." The blades of these spears continue to move and dig into the bull's back throughout the fight, causing bleeding and tissue damage. The bull may also suffer internal bleeding.

Tweet Bullfighting is a cruel sport that pits a bull against men who wield a variety of lethal weapons. WSPA is working with Spanish member societies to end this cruel ‘sport’ in the region of Catalonia, northern Spain. Our ongoing joint petition is handed into the Catalan authroities at strategic moments to support anti-bullfighting activities.
    Why are bullfights cruel?
    • Most bullfights last for about 15 minutes, with a series of deliberately vicious stages. The bull is taunted and stabbed with a variety of spears, barbed spikes and daggers. These weapons are designed to inflict intense pain and cause blood loss to weaken the animal.
After this period of suffering, the Matador finally kills the exhausted and dying bull. Many bulls die drowning in their own blood because the Matador’s inaccuracy often pierces their lungs instead of the heart.
Following this, a short dagger, or 'puntilla', is used to sever its spinal cord at the neck before the bull is dragged out of the arena, sometimes still alive.

Spain had a few women bullfighters like Juanita Cruz, Conchita Cintrón, Maribel Atiénzar, and other, but they had much less recognition than men. A clear example is CRISTINA SANCHEZ DE PABLOS, a brave bullfighter from Madrid. She started fighting in 1986, when she was 14 years old. After 13 years of great performances, she finally left the sport in 1999 due to the position of the bull fighting world in ignoring her. They simply left her out from the posters of the "corridas", although the great work she was doing. As she said "The limit has been I couldn't see myself announced in my fair (San Isidro, Madrid)". If women are able to take a career so dangerous like that, they shouldn't be discriminated. If they want to dare their lifes it's their problem. Or maybe the problem from men's point of view it's THEY don't want to dare to be surpassed by women. (note: I'm a man, I'm not feminist but I have to be fair).

Flamenco Preliminary Phase
During the preliminary phase the footmen, peones or capeadores work the bull with large magenta and gold capes while carefully appraising its agility, intelligence, dangers, sight and, most importantly, its strength. It's very important for the matador to determine the animal's qualities such as whether it favours one horn or the other (eg hooks to the left) or swings its horns up at the end of each pass. Sometimes a bull is reluctant to fight in which case it will be tactfully withdrawn on the sign of a green handkerchief from the president. First stage
This is when the picadores, mounted on padded and blindfolded horses provoke the bull to attack them. The aim is to plunge their lance into the bull's neck thus weakening its strong neck muscles. This causes it to lower its head without which the matador couldn't perform the coup de grace in the final part of the fight Second stage
When the bull has been sufficiently weakened by the picadores, the next stage commences, during which barbed darts decorated with colourful ribbons are placed in the bull's neck. The banderillero, carrying a banderilla in each hand, runs towards the charging bull at an angle and places the banderillas in its neck. These are not supposed to weaken the bull but rather correct any tendency to hook, regulate the carriage of the head and slow it down.
