What is "real" bowling? Can we even answer that question? There are five different types of bowling in North America that I know about. There's Duckpin Bowling, Rubber Duckpin Bowling, Fivepin Bowling, Tenpin Bowling, and finally Candlepin Bowling. You are probably most familiar with Tenpin Bowling, this is the one that you can find all accross the U.S., when you play you use a big heavy ball, you take two balls per turn, and the pins are fat on the bottom and skinnier at the top. This is probably what you would consider ton be "real" bowling. Well, that is not the bowling I will be talking about in this article. To New Englanders like myself, and some eastern Canadians, "real" bowling is Candlepin Bowling. In this type of bowling you take three balls per turn, you use a small bowling ball that fits in your hand with no finger holes, and the pins are tall and skinny. Some other differences are, when you knock down pins, and they are in the way of the other standing pins, you do not clear them inbetween balls, you actually try to hit them with the ball to slide them acreoss to knock over other pins. If you knock down all of the pins with one ball it is scored as a strike, if you knock down all of the pins with two balls it is scored as a spare, and if you knock down all of the pins in three balls it is only scored as a ten. When a ten is scored you do not recieve any extra points.

So what did you do on the last night of the 20th century? Me, I went bowling with Lyman Paul, Ann, and a friend of his from pre-school. It was not the first time for them, They are becoming old pros at it. They put the shoes on the right feet, and at least 4 of the balls hit the pins. By the way, for those of you outside of the Northeast, or who did not like to read the encyclopedia as a child (ok, I admit it, I did!), candlepin bowling uses a smaller ball (actually 3 balls per frame), and a smaller pin that is symmetrical top to bottom. Plus, they do not clear the pins until the 3rd ball, so you get to use "dead-wood" to help clear the pins Photo Index Daddy Plays Pinball Lyman Paul Plays Pinball

Manchester, NH 03102
Owned and operated by the LaRochelle family since 1954. Now in our 55th season Opened on Tuesday, November 28, 1939 by the Hebert family. King Lanes has seen many changes over the last 68 years. Back in the early years you could hop on the trolley car and get off right in front of the lanes. Once inside pinboys would set your pins instead of automatic pinsetters. In 1954 the lanes were purchased by the LaRochelle family and automatic pinsetters were installed, quite a marvel in its time. Over the years our center has undergone many facelifts with pool tables added in the early 60's, automatic scoring in 1989, and no smoking in 1997. Now in our third generation, our family looks forward to serving your family for years to come. We are smoke free.

Introduction The sport of Candlepins is a bowling game unique to New England and the Canadian maritime Provinces. First played in Worcester Massachusetts in 1880, Candlepin Bowling is an exciting skillful sport, requiring minimal physical strength while demanding great timing, dexterity and patience from each participant. Candlepin bowling is enjoyed by the young and old, the strong and the handicapped, by boys and girls, men and women. It is indeed a sport for all people. That is what prompted the formation of the International Candlepin Bowling Association. The I.C.B.A. is an umbrella organization that consist of delegates from each State and Provincial Association. Its members see Candlepin Bowling as a part of history and wish to insure its future. One of the goals of the I.C.B.A. is to unify the sport so that Candlepin Bowlers will be bowling under the same conditions and rules no matter where they bowl. This site contains the official Candlepin rules as of June 7, 2005. Welcome to the sport of Candlepins. To print a copy of the rule book click on the following link.

History
The pins in ten-pin bowling were originally tall and slender, almost cylindrical. It was hard to get high scores with such pins, so bowling alleys in New York City about 1850 began to use the familiar larger, bottle-shaped pins. After the Civil War, "big pin" bowling became the dominant version of the sport throughout the country. But in 1881, Justin P. White, the owner of a billiard room in Worcester, Massachusetts, and John J. Monsey, an expert billiards player, revivedor perhaps re-inventedthe older form of bowling. The original candlepins were 11 inches high and tapered to a diameter of 1 inch at each end. Bowlers used a wooden ball, 3 inches in diameter and weighing about 3 pounds, on a regulation-sized tenpin alley. Because of the size of the ball and spacing of the pins, it was very difficult to get a good score, so White and Monsey hit on the idea of leaving fallen pins, or "deadwood," on the lane to increase scoring. Using deadwood to help knock down the remaining pins is an important tactical feature of candlepin bowling. The pins are now somewhat bigger than in 1881: 15 3/4 inches high and 2 15/16 inches at the middle, tapering to 1 3/4 inch at the ends. The ball is 4 1/2 inches in diameter and weighs from 2 pounds, 5 ounces, to 2 pounds, 7 ounces.
