41. Candlepin Bowling
Candlepin bowling is all I knew about growing up, but I later found out it's only in a small part of United States (on the east coast). Find out more here.

Amidst a tangled web site map contact
candlepin bowling I had a paper route when I was 10 and I delivered the newspaper to a candlepin bowling alley. I had no idea there was another type of bowling and in addition to playing many video games I bowled there quite often. I would usually score in the 80's to 90's and would sometimes break 100. I don't remember what my highest score was, but I think it was around 121. I liked how you had to learn how to score your own card, instead of having it automated because it forced me to understand the game. I enjoyed watching the State Bowling Tournaments on TV to see if I could glean any pointers from how they bowled. It wasn't until I went to Utah for college that I discovered that no one in the Western United States knew what candlepin bowling was. After doing further research I found that while the New England area had both candlepin bowling and ten-pin (or duck-pin) bowling, no one else did. The International Candlepin Bowling Association web site has more details about how the game is played as well as a very complete list of rules and records. Now that I've discovered that I can't bowl candlepin out here in the west I always make a point of bowling a few strings whenever I go back east to visit my family.

Candlepin Bowling Tips
By Richard A. Manfredi eHow Contributor updated: December 1, 2009 I want to do this! What's This? The size of shape of the candlepin bowling pins and ball make scoring a difficult task. Candlepin Bowling Tips It is far easier to control the ball if it is held with the fingertips rather than in the palm of the hand. Holding the ball from underneath with fingers spread apart and a firm grip should allow you to maintain control throughout the throw. The grip should feel natural and repeatable. A consistent grip will lead to consistent scoring.
The Approach
  • The standard approach involves taking three steps toward the foul line, with each step in sync with natural arm movements that are similar to those used in normal walking. The bowler can begin with the foot opposite the throwing hand slightly ahead of the other foot (left foot for right-handed bowlers) before taking the first complete step. The throwing arm should move back with the second step and begin moving forward before the bowler begins the third step.
This third step is the "slide." The momentum from the push off of the second step allows the bowler to slide their leg during their third step. While this is happening, the throwing arm should be moving forward to release the ball, followed by a steady follow through.

        Candlepin Bowling
It was back in 1880 that Justin White adjusted the size of his pins at his Worcester, Masachusetts bowling hall, giving birth to Candlepin Bowling, a highly popular pint-size version of Ten-Pin Bowling. Now played almost exclusively in northern New England and in the Canadian Maritime Provinces, Candlepin Bowling is a game of power and accuracy. Paradoxically, Candlepin Bowling is both much easier and far more difficult than regular bowling. The balls are much smaller and weigh less than 3 pounds. There are no finger holes, and players of all ages and abilities can whip the ball down the alley. But because both the ball and the pins are lighter, it is far more difficult to bowl strikes and spares. Players are allowed three throws per frame, and bowlers may hit fallen pins (called wood) to knock down other pins. There has never been a perfect "300" score. The top score is 245. Good players will score around 100 to 110, and novice players should be content with a score of 90. There are a handful of alleys in and around Boston, and many of the alleys maintain their own quirky charm and history. Needham's

    Candlepin Bowling
The three objects above are identifiable probably only to New Englanders. They are, of course, candlepin bowling balls. The sport created in New England is played only here and in some of the Canadian Maritimes.
For our friends not familiar with candlepin bowling, the game is a bit harder than ten-pin bowling (big balls). The pins are more narrow and streamlined (like candles), the balls are smaller (like grapefruit). The balls can frequently pass right through the spaces between the pins and hit nothing, prompting much harassment from fellow bowlers.

Gosh, I lovge bowling & was actually pretty decent at it in my prime. But I only did "big balls" as you say always wanted to try candlepins, but there weren't any in Vermont I knew of. My father liked to watch a candlepin show on one of the Boston stations on weekends. It seemed interesting because they don't clear the deadwood & you can use it to make shots. Fun post!
