Wet, Wild and Wonderful
Things to do with a bit of plastic
Plastic is a wonderful invention - almost indestructible, weatherproof and never rots. When you have a certain variety of plastic, shaped in a somewhat hydrodynamic fashion, your imagination starts to take over and you begin to think what mischief one can get up to with such an implement. Applying this theory to the art of canoeing, or kayaking to be a little more correct, one transcends a greater part of the history of man, from his earlier priorities of survival through to his modern day recreational pursuits. Along the way, the design focus of his water borne vehicle also changed. This evolution has never been so rapid as that of the last five to ten years. To make a comparison with the automobile, it would mean trying to imagine our roads filled with fibreglass vehicles. The consequences for safety strength and durability are obvious. And so it is that the art of kayaking, especially the wild water variety has, literally, gone places never dreamt of.

The Green River through Mammoth Cave National Park is one of the finest family oriented canoeing streams in the state of Kentucky. Mammoth Cave became a National Park in 1941. Canoeing the Green, you can experience one way early settlers found new homes during westward expansion. Nature has taken its course along the Green River and has, in many areas, reclaimed the environmental conditions of 200 years ago. Canoers can expect to encounter deer, beaver, fox, bobcat, wild turkey, a large variety of birds, and several different species of fish such as muskie, small mouth bass, and catfish.

A great way to enjoy the Sierras is floating and paddling through some of the peaceful lakes of Mono or Crowley Lake. Or experience the incredible calm of the high alpine waters canoeing or kayaking in one of the many lakes nestled in the Eastern Sierra. There are lots of freshwater lakes that offer delightful locations to paddle kayaks and canoes. You can paddle your boat to a secluded beach and enjoy a picnic in the sand.
Crowley Lake is a large freshwater lake close to Mammoth Lakes with spectacular scenery of the surrounding Sierra Nevada peaks. Rentals are available from Caldera Kayak right at the Crowley Marina from May to October. Guided tours are also available so you won't race by a scenic gem overlooked by many paddlers. Or you can paddle a kayak along the twenty-mile shoreline and discover hidden coves and sandy beaches for yourself.
Grant Lake, a reservoir upstream from Mono Lake, has lots of sandy beaches and great vistas of Mt. Wood. Trees line the shoreline and the water is refreshing on a hot day. Autumn colors are especially vibrant on the lakeshore and hills that surround the lake. Grant Lake is part of the watershed that fills Mono Lake and the lake is quite full these days.
You can also paddle through Mono Lake, but must be extra cautious of the tufa towers. Paddle a kayak through the tufa towers and experience the strange and fascinating ecosystem that makes the lake unique. Mono Lake is the birth place of eighty five percent of the California gull species within California, home to the brine shrimp, alkali flies, and is an essential feeding layover for numerous species of migratory birds.

A brief history of our club
Our club was formed in 1968 as Kingsthorpe Canoe Club, and renamed two years later as Northampton Canoe Club.
It has moved its paddling base around the town over the years mainly operating from Midsummer Meadow. In July 1999 we moved to the Nene Whitewater Centre . The club is predominantly but not exclusively a white water club.
We are lucky that we have the Nene Whitewater Centre as our base, providing consistently paddlable white water, as well as
a beautiful stretch of the river Nene for beginners and those who prefer placid water. Beginners
We welcome beginners and run a range of sessions and courses for novice Kayakers and Canoeists. These start with come
and try it sessions and 1 star courses, through to 2 star, 3 star and 4 star courses for more experience paddlers. We can even arrange courses for aspiring coaches.

LCKC is proud to present the YRL Fall Fungatta! The LCKC Youth Racing League is an introduction to the Olympic Discipline of Flatwater Canoe / Kayak racing at the Lanier ’96 Olympic Venue. The program is offered in the spring and in the fall. Teams of up to 25 youth, ages 10 to 15 practice twice a week for 6 weeks under the direction coaches in all types of canoes, kayaks and dragon boats. Athletes have the opportunity to compete in two weekend events during the program. The first is the Fun Regatta, where teams have a chance to practice boats skills and racing in a variety of boats. No lanes are assigned and no points are scored. It’s just for FUN! At the end of the six-week program, teams will showcase their skills by competing in a variety of canoes and kayaks at the Youth Racing League Fungatta. Individual athletes and crews will be awarded medals for placing in the top 3, and teams will compete for the overall team burgee. The LCKC-YRL is often the first step in an athlete’s journey to achieving their personal best in the sport of sprint canoe-kayak, whether their goal is fun, fitness, or representing the United States on a National Team. Participants will learn the FUNdamentals of the sport, building the foundation for future success as Flatwater canoe-kayak racers at any level.
