The Duke of Edinburgh The Prince of Wales The Queen Home ... Carriage driving Carriage driving In 1971, The Duke of Edinburgh was still looking for a sport to replace Polo, which he had retired from in 1970. He had been introduced to the sport of carriage driving when he had been involved in compiling a set of rules for competition carriage driving as President of the International Equestrian Federation. He decided that it was the perfect sport for someone in middle age, with a competitive drive and a love of horses. He began driving ponies, before progressing to Cleveland Bay horses. By 1973 he felt that he was suitably proficient to take up the sport competitively and he still enters carriage driving competitions today having achieved several wins in regional competitions.

Carriage
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search This article is about carriage as a wheeled vehicle for people. For other uses, see Carriage (disambiguation) Catherine II 's carved, painted and gilded Coronation Coach ( Hermitage Museum A carriage is a wheeled vehicle for people, usually horse-drawn; litters (palanquins) and sedan chairs are excluded, since they are wheelless vehicles. The carriage is especially designed for private passenger use and for comfort or elegance, though some are also used to transport goods. It may be light, smart and fast or heavy, large and comfortable. Carriages normally have suspension using leaf springs , elliptical springs (in the 19th century) or leather strapping. A public passenger vehicle would not usually be called a carriage – terms for such include stagecoach charabanc and omnibus . Working vehicles such as the (four-wheeled) wagon and (two-wheeled) cart share important parts of the history of the carriage, as does the fast (two-wheeled) chariot Full citation needed Full citation needed

Carriage driving
The AVCP provides carriage driving activities for disabled and disadvantaged adults and children. The driving sessions take place in an enclosed arena, or in fields adjacent to the arena, and in general last for about 20-25 minutes. We can provide for groups of up to six but are happy to organise individual sessions if necessary, all ages are welcome. Why carriage driving? For some participants mounting and riding a horse is not an option, carriage driving can offer an interesting and achievable alternative. For other participants driving is their first choice, enjoying the company of the carriage driver sitting beside them and the responsiveness and obedience of the pony pulling the carriage. The driving session is comfortable and easy for those not used to regular physical exercise. The carriages we use are easy to access, with a large comfortable seat. For those who have poor balance, we can use a backstep behind the driver, allowing a third person to ride on the carriage to help steady the driver’s position and offer extra support. An experienced driver is in the carriage at all times to maintain control of the horse, and to encourage the driver to learn the skills required to start taking as much control as is appropriate in order to fully benefit from the carriage driving experience. Sessions can take the form of a quiet ride in the carriage, this relaxing activity usually has a calming effect, alternatively a more hands on driving session which involves learning to communicate commands to the horse and to negotiate the horse and carriage through achievable manoeuvres.

  • Carriage Driving Morgan horses Plum Creek Carriage Society photography ... amywink August 1st, 2010 Heavy fog descended as I entered Caldwell County this morning. We were expecting a high of 102 so a little morning cloud cover would be nice but this made the buffalo disappear! As I groomed Will, the moisture settled on his lashes, ears and forelock. When I wiped it off, it was back in a few minutes. Still, it did keep things nice and cool. We had a wonderful drive. After a break from driving for 2 weeks, our drive yesterday was sort of bumpy, but today we had worked out the kinks. But he told her he was working! Later on (after the sun came out), I brought her out for some grooming and she got to meet the carriage again.
Where does the summer go? ...
amywink July 29th, 2010 It seems so suddenly to be the end of July! The heat and the rain (?!?) have kept us from driving as much but it is nice to see green in July. Last year, everything was scorched in the drought but this year we still have flowers blooming in the pastures and grass too.
