Mind-Body-Harmony

Several years ago, I took a wonderful course in Tai Chi Chuan offered by a local community school for adult education. I found great pleasure and relaxation in the movements, slow and gentle, a kind of East Asian ballet. But suddenly the ten weeks were up; the instructor was not from the area and any other nearby Tai Chi courses I came across were, again, of limited duration. Then I found it; not only Tai Chi but seven other martial arts combined and taught together as one. It is called Chung Moo Doe, a martial art practiced for over 1500 hundred years in East Asia under various names. Along with Tai Chi, Chung Moo Doe includes Kung Fu, Ai-Ki-Do/Hap-Ki-Do, Jujitsu, Tae-Kwon-Do, Bagwa Chang, Ship Pal Gae (18 Weapons) and Samurai Sword. Originating in China, about 20% to 30% of the movements are from other East Asian countries. It was brought to the United States in the early 1970's by Chong Su Nim (Master) "Iron" Kim of Korea, the only non-Chinese practitioner of Chung Moo Doe to attain the level of Master. "

Bagwa is the highest form of martial art training available through Chung Moo Doe. This style originated from Bagwa the first generation Chung Su Nim (honorable founder) of the Chung Moo martial arts during the Han Dynasty. Bagwa is the person that developed the walking and breathing forms known as the Bagwa walking positions and Bagwa breathing form. This style is comprised of 128 main movements derived from the movements of animals. The practice of Bagwa Chung includes many offensive and defensive movements that balance the body while developing internal and external strength. This form is practiced by all ages and is especially beneficial for older students. In the early 1970's, Chong Su Nim "Iron" Kim brought the Chung Moo line of martial arts to the United States from East Asia. The roots of the Chung Moo Style originated from the "Bagwa" line of Moo Doe around the time of the Han Dynasty. In the United States alone, for over the past 20 years, hundreds of thousands have built their lives, reached their goals, and achieved healthier, happier lives through Chung Moo training. Over the centuries, martial artists have known that the biggest gift they could give to others was to pass movements so that others could achieve good health, happiness and longer life. When someone does something for you that directly benefits your health and your life, you will never forget them. Earning respect comes from the recognition of others. Just as instructors have respect for those that teach them, the students have respect for their instructors. Through their actions, the Chung Moo instructors are building a new line of Moo Doe in the United States and are writing a new page in Moo Doe history.

Students practice kick defenses. Kong Su translates to mean "empty hand". The movements practiced are primarily beneficial for external development, developing strength and flexibility in the muscles, joints and ligaments and improving one's cardiovascular conditioning. Practitioners develop a basic sense of balance, timing, coordination, power and speed. Kong Su movements are linear in nature and consist of both offensive and defensive movements using the hands, feet and elbows. These techniques can be applied in self defense situations with minimal practice. Kong Su encompasses movements from Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Tang Su Doe, Chung Doe Quan, Moo Doe Quan, Sung Moo Quan, Su Bak Doe, Tae Su Doe and Gi Doe Quan.
The correct practice of Kong Su helps to provide the practitioner with a basic ability for self defense and a solid foundation of external development. Kong Su also give the practitioner a basic level of understanding and ability in order to learn higher level forms and movements.

8 Complete Martial Arts Taught as ONE! The main emphasis of Moo Doe training is to develop and strengthen the individual mind and body. The Chung Moo Doe line of martial art training incorporates movements from eight different martial art styles for complete mental and physical development.
In Eastern China, practitioners took advantage of their closeness to the ocean to develop forms such as Tang Non, Tang Non Choy Yo, Sa Chung and Su Chung that took advantage of the movements of the ocean, water and sand. These movements were often practiced in the sand.
In Western China the terrain is mountainous. Martial arts movements developed here resemble the movements of the native animals. Practitioners also used herbs found in the mountains to aid and enhance the body. Some of the forms developed were Kom Gong Quan, Kyung Gong Sul Bope, Kway Dae Quan, Chul Sa Chung, Sok Chung, Mae Wha Kom, Kom and Chung Yun Doe.
In Northern China the climate is cold. To stimulate the circulation and build external body strength, movements and forms developed speed. Some forms include Dok Sa, Pal Yung Su, Way Chung, San Chung, Yung Ma and Chi Chung as well as movements derived from birds of prey.
In Southern China the climate is warm. The forms developed were slow and concentrated on breathing to build internal strength. Some forms developed were Tai Chi Chung, Hym Yok, QiGong breathing, Chung Sul and Sam Chok Chu Chuk Bong.

Nearly five years after raiding a number of John C. Kim's suburban martial arts schools, authorities said Kim and others skimmed large amounts of cash from operations to buy a Texas ranch, a California home and other assets. The schools which were particularly popular in the region in the 1970s and '80s allegedly lured students into a martial arts program and charged them hefty fees, from $900 to $18,000 per course, without reporting all of that income. Force and threats of force also were used as part of the consipiracy, a federal indictment said. Kim was arrested Wednesday in California. He and 13 others from across the nation are scheduled to be arraigned April 20 in federal court.

Pam Delcore , 52, stands tall, hands at her sides, eyes narrowed in concentration. Then she is a blur of white motion, pivoting on one foot and thrusting her hand in the air in a classic "Tai Chi Chung" stance.
"She couldn’t do that in her 30s," her instructor, Frank Cullerton, said. "She’s healthier in her 50s than she was in her 30s."
Delcore has been practicing a form of martial arts known as Chung Moo Doe for 1 1/2 years. A compilation of eight martial styles, Chung Moo Doe includes a range of movements from the fluid motions of Tai Chi to weapons training.
The picture of health now, Delcore suffered the near crippling pain of a ruptured disc 12 years ago. A surgical procedure relieved the immediate pressure on the disc, but Delcore continued to suffer residual back pain and stiffness for years afterward.
"My physical movements were limited," she said. "when I was driving, I couldn’t look over my shoulder at the cars. That’s dangerous. I also had stress-related pain in my upper back and shoulders."

    Kum Gung Quan
Chong Su Nim "Iron" Kim demonstrates a Kum Gung Quan movement as the body bends like a bow to defend against or attack a low target. This movement depicts the whipping motion of bamboo in strong wind. It can help strengthen internal organs and joints, and improve coordination. Chong Su Nim "Iron" Kim demonstrates a movement from Kum Gung Quan with complete concentration on the toe and hand positions. By increasing strength, flexibility, and joint circulation, this form can prevent arthritis and rheumatism while relieving stress and strengthening the immune system. Aligning the fingertips of both hands with the eyes, this Kum Gung Quan movement portrays a scorpion and requires extreme concentration and mental strength to practice. This exact position uses balanced concentration to align the fingertips precisely. By practicing this movement, a person can attain mental acuity and show better judgement in his or her everyday life. Practicing on rocks or climbing a mountain while defending against an attacker, this movement from Kum Gung Quan form protects the lungs, strengthens vision, and increases circulation. Kum Gung Quan originated in China approximately 1200 years ago and took two generations to develop. The form requires 5 1/2 uninterrupted hours to complete. Contained within the Kum Gung Quan form are movements derived from animals, ocean waves, birds of prey, and the great strength many associate with mountains.

As proven by history, the origins of a line of martial arts are based on the movement, strength and credibility of the individual master, his instructors and students. The strength of the movement determines how strong the style is and the credibility of that generation of individuals. The achievements of Grandmaster “Iron” Kim demonstrate the strength and credibility of the Oom Yung / Chung Moo line of martial arts knowledge. A Few of Grandmaster “Iron” Kim’s Achievements: At the age of seven, Grandmaster “Iron” Kim began his life’s path in the study and practice of martial arts. To achieve perfection of his martial arts movements, Grandmaster “Iron” Kim many times chose the solitude of the mountain and ocean areas of Asia to practice the forms and techniques that he learned. Although he learned from many qualified teachers, a majority of the knowledge that Grandmaster “Iron” Kim possesses was passed down through Grandmaster Wang Po, the 7th generation Grandmaster of Yin Yang Doe.

    History of
The School of Oom Yung Doe
    (Chung Moo Doe)
Prior to any pictures, paintings or drawings all Moo Doe (martial arts) history came from legends. Historically, there are different movements and different legends associated with "Bagwa". Some people think it was a person. Others believe it is a style of martial art or a figure of a pattern of movement. Some people say that the Bagwa style originated about 200 to 400 years ago. Others argue that it is an ancient martial arts form which dates back several thousand years. The Oom Yung / Chung Moo martial arts follow the legend that Bagwa was the name of a real person and that he was the founder of the Oom Yung / Chung Moo line of martial arts about 1500 to 2000 years ago. Today, the Oom Yung Doe / Chung Moo Doe style of Moo Doe (martial arts) is taught in the United States and throughout the world by it's founder, Grandmaster "Iron" Kim. It encompasses all the form and movement of the Oom Yung Doe line of Traditional Moo Doe taught over the centuries since the time of the first generation Grandmaster "Bagwa". The seventh generation Grandmaster, Wang Po, taught the Oom Yung line of Moo Doe under the given name of Yin Yang Doe. Other styles of East Asian Moo Doe were incorporated into the original Oom Yung / Chung Moo line. Today about twenty percent of the Oom Yung Doe / Chung Moo Doe style is derived from other styles of East Asian martial arts and has come to be known as "Eight Martial Arts taught as One" or "All Martial Arts United".
