Construction Page
My tree in the backyard. That is my neighbors house behind the tree, their garage is a few feet to the right. You can see why this was a major pain to cut down to this point (the tree originally extended at least 20 feet beyond all the stubs). I invented a system of ropes to cut the tree into small pieces and lower them slowly, but probably only avoided disaster by luck. Now I understand why arborists don't have how-to books, this sort of work should be done by pros. View from my porch roof. The branch that I use for overhanging roof routes extends 15 ft. up from the main trunk. This is probably rare to find a branch of this size, I expect most people will only have the main trunk to climb, or short overhangs. Closeup of one of the chains. Notice that the chain goes over the top of a lag screw eye, not through it. The theory is that it will transfer more of the pull to the back of the tree as the chain squeezes the trunk. I can't prove this is true, but it makes sense that the chain would put more downward pull on the eyes if it went through them. Note the screw link holding the tails of the chain together, the rope uses the ends of the chain for pulleys (the other one can't be seen in this photo). A screw link attaches the chain to the eye on this side, another eye 180 degrees around the trunk is the same. This system has lots of redundancy, and the chain is rated for much more stress than this setup can generate.

This article is a travel topic Rock climbing, although often considered by non-climbers to be a reckless, dangerous, "thrill-seeking" sport, is not only a safe and fun way to push oneself to one's physical and mental limits; climbing also presents an excellent incentive to seek out some of the most beautiful places in the world in search of some fresh rock.

There are many different forms of climbing that are segmented mostly by the type of equipment used when climbing. The two main categories are aid climbing and free climbing.
  • Aid climbing is a style in which equipment, such as pitons, cams, nuts and/or screws, are placed allowing the climber to pull on them and haul himself upward. Free climbing , the style typically referred to by the general term "rock climbing," is a style in which the climber moves forward and upward solely by gripping, squeezing, smearing, pinching with whatever natural strength he can muster the available natural features of the rock. Ropes and other equipment are used solely for protection in the case of an accidental fall, not to aid in the ascent. Free climbing is further categorized by the type of protection used.
Trad climbing (short for "traditional") involves the placement of temporary protection such as cams, nuts, and hexes, into the rock's natural features while ascending. This method is appropriate for nearly every type of rock, but requires a significant amount of safety equipment.

T HE SPORT of free climbing-climbing rocks using equipment for safety only-has grown very popular: hundreds of thousands of people practice the sport in the U.S. alone. Its popularity has grown in part because of advances in climbing equipment that make climbing safer.
These pages discuss the sport of free climbing-rock climbing using equipment for safety only. The sport presents a physical and mental challenge with minimal danger. Because of the potential for serious injury, much specialized safety equipment has been devised, making it a very safe sport in most cases. Detailed knowledge of safety equipment is crucial for safe climbing, however, and requires an attention to detail absent in many other sports.
These pages describe some of the safety equipment used in free climbing and two common techniques for using it. In one technique, top-roping, a rope from the top of the climb always holds the climber, making most slips harmless. In the other technique, lead climbing, the climber attaches the rope to the rock at points along the climb. This is not as safe, it allows more routes to be climbed.
These pages also describe how to get started in the sport. Finding a place to climb is easily done with one of the many available guidebooks. How to use equipment safely is best learned from an experienced climber, although some books are available.
