Cockfight
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search The Cock Fight , 1847, by Jean-Léon Gérôme A cockfight is a blood sport between two roosters (cocks or rasmus'), held in a ring called a cockpit. Cockfighting is now illegal throughout most of the United States, Brazil and in most of Europe. The combatants, aptly referred to as gamecocks , are specially bred birds, conditioned for increased stamina and strength. The comb and wattle are cut off in order to meet show standards of the American Gamefowl Society and the Old English Game Club and to prevent freezing in colder climates. Cocks possess congenital aggression toward all males of the same species . Cocks are given the best of care until near the age of two years old. They are conditioned, much like professional athletes prior to events or shows. Wagers are often made on the outcome of the match. While not all fights are to the death, the cocks do endure physical trauma that may result in death. Cockfighting was at one time considered to be an accepted, traditional sporting event in the United States. In many other areas around the world, cockfighting is still practiced as a mainstream event; in some countries it is government controlled.

Don't roosters naturally fight with each other?
Do the birds really wear weapons strapped to their legs?
Is there illegal gambling and drugs at cockfights?
Besides being cruel to animals, cockfighting is closely connected to other crimes such as gambling, drugs and acts of violence. Illegal weapons have also been found at cockfights because of the large amounts of cash present. Moreover, law enforcement raids across the country have established that cockfights are well attended by gang members, further encouraging venues for violence, illegal drug use and firearms.
Are children allowed to attend cockfights?
Despite unsettling facts, cockfights often inspire a party-like atmosphere in which entire families gather, including children. This often leads to concerns that a child will not only become desensitized toward cruelty to animals, but are at risk of becoming injured by the sparring birds or abused by other people.
Does cockighting take place in the U.S.?

    Cockfighting Fact Sheet
    1. What is cockfighting? Cockfighting is a centuries-old blood sport in which two or more specially bred birds, known as gamecocks, are placed in an enclosure to fight, for the primary purposes of gambling and entertainment. A cockfight usually results in the death of one of the birds; sometimes it ends in the death of both. A typical cockfight can last anywhere from several minutes to more than half an hour. 2. How does it cause animal suffering? The birds, even those who do not die, suffer in cockfights. The birds cannot escape from the fight, regardless of how exhausted or injured they become. Common injuries include punctured lungs, broken bones, and pierced eyes. Such severe injuries occur because the birds' legs are usually fitted with razor-sharp steel blades or with gaffs, which resemble three-inch-long, curved ice picks. These artificial spurs are designed to puncture and mutilate. 3. Are there other concerns? Law enforcement officials have documented a strong connection between cockfighting and the distribution of illegal drugs. Drug enforcement agents often learn about animal fighting operations as a result of narcotics investigations.

CEBU VISITORS GUIDE : COCKFIGHTING
COCKFIGHTING While it should be noted that a good many Cebuanos have no interest in cockfights, especially the better educated ones, cockfighting is a nonetheless a national obsession and huge industry. I went to a cockfight to investigate what makes cockfighting so compelling for the great majority of Cebuanos. Cockpits are strictly regulated. There are two types, legal and illegal. There are all sorts of restrictions for legal cockpits, such as, they are not allowed to be near a school, or only one is allowed per 100,000 citizens; these regulations are determined by the Cockfighting Law of 1974, and Presidential Decree No. 449. Legal cockpits, called sabongan , are taxed by municipal governments. Because of the restrictions, illegal cockpits are common, especially during fiestas. Unlike the permanent, legal cockpits, they tend to be in the open air. These are called tigbakay . Cebu City's current mayor, Tommy Osmeña, seems to tolerate them, although he has cracked down hard on video gambling machines. "It's a way of life," he says. I've been told that the mayor has unsuccessfully tried to legalize the tigbakay, in order to raise revenues for the city, and to cut out another source of bribes for policemen. Before I ever visited a cockfighting arena, it quickly became clear to me that cockfighting plays a prominent role in life in the Philippines. Gamecocks are everywhere; you can scarcely walk five yards without coming across a gamecock

Thus it is difficult to stamp out. Like other illegal animal fights, cockfights take place surreptitiously What is Cockfighting? Cockfighting is an organized fight between two roosters who are placed in a pit to fight each other. The roosters have been trained to severely injure and/or kill one another. These birds, which are raised for the purpose of fighting, are tormented to make them aggressive. They are also given various legal and illegal drugs such as strychnine, caffeine, amphetamines, and epinephrine to make them more aggressive, increase their endurance and clot the blood that will flow during the fight. The natural spurs of the roosters are sawed off and replaced by razor sharp steel blades or curved implements called gaffs which measure from one to three inches long. During the fight, from which neither rooster can escape, the birds peck and maim one another with their beaks and weapons. The long, sharp gaffs stab deep into the flesh often requiring handlers to physically pull the animals apart. Although they have been bred to fight, the animals often become tired, incapable and suffer severe injuries. The fight only ends when one rooster is dead or is too weak to fight. The loser then gets thrown in the trash, sometimes while still alive. For the winner, there is no guarantee that he will survive his injuries and often ends up with the same fate as the losing bird.

COCKFIGHTING IN KAIFENG-
AN ANCIENT-STYLED GAME
Cockfighting is indeed a unique game of China, which has a history longer than any other animal fight in the world. From Song Dynasty up to the present day, cockfighting has been popular in Kaifeng.
In Kaifeng, the cockfighting enthusiasts are called "cockfighting players". They take cockfighting as a pleasure. Most of the enthusiasts love wushu and drinking. They are loyal to their friends and strict to discipline. They have their own tradition, i.e. they consider principles more important than favoritism . If you really love his gamecock, through a friend's introduction, he can present it to you freely, but you must strictly observe the rules: you may raise it, but you cannot transfer it to others, nor can you breed it with hens. If you are unable t o continue to raise it for one reason or another, you might as well kill it and have its meat, but you must give its head and paws back to its original owner to show your good faith. If you are not a cockfighting enthusiast, the owner will not give his gamecock to you even if you are his close relative or friend. It is said that the enthusiast would rather offer you one thousand dollars than give you a gamecock.
It is no exaggeration to say that the enthusiasts love their cocks more than their children. They always show their deep concern for the cocks. The feed is repeatedly washed before the cock eats it. They spread some fine coal cinder in the cage every day, for fear the cock's feet might be frozen. In winter, which is the cockfighting season, they will cover the cock cage with a cloth hood or with their clothes, or even put the cock into their bosom so as to keep the cock in good health and vigorous fighting will. The gamecocks of Kaifeng are characterized by their pure breeding. The breeding selection is very strict. The enthusiast must know his cock's five older generations. No close breeding is allowed. The purpose in raising the cock is for fighting. The enthusiast has systematic methods in raising and training it.

COCKFIGHTING
Cockfighting was widely practiced on the American frontier and was especially noted in the South. Southerners migrating into Oklahoma brought this pastime with them. Rural Midwesterners were not strangers to the sport and also made contributions to its diffusion throughout the state. However, parts of the state in which cockfighting is especially noted generally have high concentrations of southerners in the population. It is also noteworthy that cockpits are concentrated in counties adjoining those southern states (Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas) with more restrictive laws and that these cockpits have drawn large audiences across state lines into Oklahoma. Cockfights have historically taken place in cockpits, which are round arenas bounded by wood, plexiglass, or chicken wire. Stadium seating might be offered at more posh facilities, but at "brush pits" the audience might stand or sit on primitive benches or old car seats. Betting would commence before the fight and continue throughout. Gambling has been central to the pastime, despite the common position by apologists to the contrary. Cockfights would usually be arranged in sets called derbies, in which the cockfighter whose birds won the most fights of the day, won the derby.
