The cocks are trained to be aggressive toward each other then put into a ring to fight. Most cockfights end with one of the birds being killed. Many people feel that cockfighting should be outlawed due to potential animal cruelty, while in other places, the pastime continues to draw support. The history of cockfighting stretches back into ancient times.
Gamecock Worship
  • Prior to becoming fighting birds, gamecocks in ancient times represented strength and were considered worthy of respect from men, according to the KPLC News website. Syrians worshiped the gamecock, while ancient Greeks and Romans thought gamecocks were linked to Apollo, Mercury and Mars. Sumatrans also worshiped gamecocks, with temples and rituals dedicated to the birds.

Cockfighting craze takes wing: The Philippine national betting pastime is going international By Claro Cortez
    Associated Press
MANILA As if partners in a ritualized slow dance, each rooster lowers a wing and circles nearer the other, neck feathers flaring. Suddenly, one attacks and the other leaps to meet the challenge. They exchange kicks in midair, slashing with 4-inch-long, razor-sharp steel blades attached to the back of their left legs. In a few seconds it's over. One bird lies lifeless; the other struggles, maimed on the dirt floor of the pit. Hundreds of roaring spectators settle their bets. To many foreigners, Philippine cockfighting is shockingly brutal far more bloody than cockfights in other countries, where the birds battle with sharpened natural leg spurs or ice pick-like steel gaffs attached to their legs. Filipino roosters fight only one or two matches because of injuries or death. Despite this twist, the Filipino national betting pastime is becoming internationalized. American breeders now supply most of the best fighting roosters, and about 30 American cockfighters regularly fight their birds in the Philippines. Canadians, Japanese and Taiwanese also occasionally compete, although so far with less success. In January an American, Carol NeSmith of Fulton, Miss., teamed up with two Filipino breeders to best 65 other entries in the Philippines' leading cockfighting competition, the "World Slasher Derby."

The Facts The Hillbillies The Humane Society's Reaction The Facts Steve King is actively opposing a bill now before Congress to crack down on staged animal fighting. The bill would upgrade penalties for the crime of shipping animals across state lines for staged dogfights and cockfights – contests in which the animals are placed in pits to tear one another apart for the amusement and illegal wagering of spectators. Why? King, said he would not support any animal welfare legislation until Roe v. Wade is overturned. To outlaw animal cruelty while abortion is still legal “diminishes human life, and for that reason I will be opposing this bill.” And, of course, Steve King is one of the favorite members of congress of the pro-cockfighting lobbying group CHETA The Hillbillies Steve King's Beverly Hillbillies

Iowa Representative Steve King has said he will not support any animal welfare legislation until Roe v. Wade is overturned. Excuse me? Isn't this somewhat of an oxymoronic statement? I mean, King is a republican, and they're the ones who will ensure Roe v. Wade NEVER gets overturned. (And risk losing all those single-issue voters?) I mean, let's be realistic, folks. If they didn't have that to use as a wedge issue, voters might (gulp) actually start paying attention to what and whom the R-Rated Party really stands for. (Sorry Uncle Jed and Jethro, but it ain't you. Nope. Not even you, Miss Ellie May.)

She frequently responds to e-mail at jrose@mail.giga.com The Sunday Mexican fiesta at Guadalajara’s Camino Real promised cockfighting. I should have expected the "cockfight" would amount to a quick display of two cheerfully bored roosters who could have auditioned for a wholesome children’s show. "Genuine cockfights are illegal in Mexico," chastened self-appointed cognoscenti. I should have known that a real cockfight was as likely to take place at the Camino Real as a greased pig contest would be at the Ritz-Carlton. I wanted the blood and gore that nature thrusts upon ordinary surroundings, feeding that perverse fascination many of us derive from encounters with a gruesome car accident that demands impolite staring. The clandestine excitement of the forbidden beckoned.

    Dog Fighting and Cockfighting
Dogs are not the only animals that humans force to fight each other. Cockfighting, for example, has been around for centuries. People breed a special kind of rooster and make two or more of them fight; the battles last until at least one of the birds is dead. It is believed that people first began breeding roosters for fighting in Southeast Asia more than 3,000 years ago. Cockfighting later spread to Greece and Rome and then on to Britain, before finally crossing the Atlantic about 200 years ago to find popularity in North, South and Central America. In the colonial days, cockfighting commonly took place in cities like New York, Philadelphia and Boston. Why would people make animals fight? Is there anything you can do to stop dog fighting and cockfighting? Read on to find out more.
