Please help to improve this article by introducing more precise citations where appropriate (July 2009) Coursing is the pursuit of game or other animals by dogs —chiefly greyhounds and other sighthounds —catching their prey by speed, running by sight and not by scent. Coursing was a common hunting technique, practised by the nobility, the landed and wealthy, and commoners with sighthounds and lurchers . In its oldest recorded form in the Western world , as described by Arrian , the sport was practised by all levels of society, as remained the case until Carolingian hunting law (Forest Law) appropriated hunting grounds, or commons, for the king, the nobility, and other land owners. Animals coursed include hares rabbits foxes deer of all sorts, antelope gazelle jackals wolves ... Jackrabbits and coyotes are the most common animals coursed in America . Competitive coursing in Ireland, the UK and Spain has two dogs running together. In America, generally speaking three dogs are run together.

Hare coursing
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Greyhounds coursing a hare , Dean Wolstenholme Hare coursing is the pursuit of hares with greyhounds and other sighthounds , which chase the hare by sight and not by scent. It is a competitive sport, in which dogs are tested on their ability to run, overtake and turn a hare, rather than a form of hunting aiming at the capture of game . It has a number of variations in its rules around the world. Informal coursing can be a true form of hunting . It is often conducted to kill game or vermin, mainly for food, and occasionally as a form of gambling. Coursing is a long established hunting technique, practiced historically with greyhounds, other sighthound breeds, or with lurchers which are crossbred sighthounds, and working breeds. The sport grew in popularity in Europe during the 19th century, but has since experienced a decline due in part to the introduction of greyhound racing and betting. In recent decades some controversy has developed around hare coursing, with some viewing it as a cruel bloodsport and others seeing it as a traditional activity that assists in the conservation of hare populations and tests the ability of sighthounds. Since 2005, hare coursing has been illegal throughout the UK, but continues elsewhere in the world as a regulated and judged, competitive sport, especially in

whippet coursing Home Whippets Puppies Breed Guide ... nickridley.com For hundreds of years, the Whippet was prized as a small hunting dog, then as a race dog and finally recognized as a breed by the Kennel Club in 1890 when pedigrees were first officially recorded. The standard by which it should be judged states "built for speed and work" but it was not until 1962 that a group of breeders started the Whippet Coursing Club, providing a venue at which these abilities could be judged publicly. Rules and procedure were those of the National Coursing Club, the only difference being that the maximum points awarded for the run-up were half those given to greyhounds. Licensed judges and slippers were employed and top kennels fearlessly ran their show champions. Whippets coursing a hare The sport quickly became popular and two more clubs were formed, the East of England WCC and the East Anglian WCC, all three having long waiting lists for membership. Dogs cannot run on frozen ground but no other weather deters members during the October to February coursing season. (left) The line waits for slipped dogs to return
Coursing "under rules" is designed not to catch a hare, in whose favour the odds are purposely stacked, but to match one dog against another, giving them points for speed and the ability to turn the hare from its chosen path before it disappears from view which is the end of the course.

Hare Coursing
No of clubs in England and Wales : 27 Ireland : Coursing is governed by the Irish Coursing Club and the rules differ slightly, as the hares are gathered before the meet and released from a man-made tunnel into the coursing field when needed. This is known as 'park coursing'. Season : September 15th - March 10th Usual start : Any time after 9.00 am. Hare coursing, as opposed to other forms of blood sports involving hounds, is not a pack event. Only two dogs are involved on any one 'course' and the area involved in the chase is usually enclosed. The hounds hunt by sight. According to the NCC (The National Coursing Club, the governing body) coursing does not claim to control hare numbers, but conserves them by ensuring that some grounds regularly coursed are not shot over outside the season. However, in most coursing areas hare shoots, to reduce numbers, does take place. Hounds - Greyhounds are the most popular dogs used in coursing and the NCC has a standard set of rules drawn up to regulate the proceedings. Greyhounds may be trained by using dummy hares or live hares in competition with another hound in open country. Several reports have been heard of live captive hares and rabbits being used, and also cats. Greyhounds used in greyhound racing may be trained at course meetings and retired hounds from racing may finish their lives in coursing surroundings.

About the Lure Coursing FAQ
The first version of this FAQ, a 74 line (page and a half) document, originally prepared by Marcia Cavan with additional info from Carol Mount was posted as part of the AKC FAQ. Since its scope was broadened from AKC only details, it was moved out of the AKC FAQ into an independent FAQ. However, the document quickly ballooned to 2000+ lines, making it difficult to read as a single document. This version returns to its "roots" as a FAQ for those who know little about the Lurecoursing. The Lurecoursing Homepage, with extensive and detailed information on this sport, is available at Bonnie Dalzells site under http://www.clark.net/pub/bdalzell/lureinfo.html
What Is Lure Coursing?
Lure Coursing is a humane sport which attempts to imitate the coursing of the rabbit or hare by sighthounds but without the hare. The sighthounds chase an artificial lure, usually a white kitchen garbage bag, sometimes tanned rabbit skins, or fake fur strips. To set up the "lure" coursing course a line composed of braided fishing line (usually 100 pound test 'trolling' line) is passed around a series of pulleys staked to the ground within a large field (at least 5 acres).
