Association Croquet is played with four balls; black and blue versus red and yellow, on a court containing 6 hoops and a centre peg (see diagram below, dimensions in yards). The game can be played as singles or doubles, each player in doubles playing with a particular ball throughout the game. Each ball must run the set course, as shown in the diagram, going through each hoop twice in a specified order and direction and then hitting the peg. The side which first completes this course with both balls wins the game. Thus the winning side has 26 points to score - 12 hoop points and the peg point with each ball. A ball scores a hoop point when it passes right through each hoop in its correct order ( runs a hoop ) in one or more strokes. The point is scored whether the ball is struck directly with the mallet or with another ball.

History
Although croquet is a rather young sport, its ancestry can be traced at least to the 14th century, and there are a couple of stories about how it originated. One is that lawn bowlers developed an indoor form of their sport to be played during the winter, adding hoops and mallets to make the game more challenging on the much smaller playing area. This indoor version of lawn bowling then moved back outdoors and become known in France as paille-maille ("ball-mallet"). The other is that paille-maille was originally a form of outdoor billiards. However, judging by what scanty documentation there is, billiards seems to have come along about a century later. It's quite possible that the movement went the other waythat paille-maille moved indoors and become billiards. In any event, the sport existed for several centuries without becoming particularly popular. Scottish golfers seem to have taken it up, possibly as a kind of practice, during the 16th century and, when James VI of Scotland became James I of England in 1604, he brought paille-maille equipment as well as golf clubs to his new court. Played during the 17th century by Charles II and his courtiers at St. James's Park in London, the name of the game was anglicized to Pall Mall, which also became the name of a nearby street. "Mall" then turned into a generic word for any street used for public strolls. And now, of course, it usually refers to an enclosed area where people stroll from store to store.

A potted history of the game
Games in which a ball had to be knocked around a course of hoops or obstacles with a mallet were popular in seventeenth and eighteenth century France. One of them, "Paille Maille", was introduced to London, where it was played in open ground near St. James's Palace - later becoming known as Pall Mall. Croquet became the sports craze of Victorian England with National Championships held at Wimbledon before the lawns there were transformed into the tennis courts of today. Despite its genteel history, croquet is by no means simply the sporting diversion at vicarage garden parties which it is often portrayed as being. Clubs exist in every part of Britain and in many countries overseas. Both national teams and individuals compete at a variety of matches and tournaments every year. Nowadays, it is more popular than it has ever been since its introduction last century and it continues to be a fast-growing sport. Back to contents

    Croquet
At Meadowood, we play the grown-up version of the backyard game of croquet that has been played for decades on luxuriously leisurely summer afternoons. Croquet is the perfect equalizer between players of widely differing physical skills. Everyone starts at the same level, so the consummate athlete has no competitive edge. In fact, croquet is a game of strategy, not unlike chess, which offers the thinking player the true advantage.
    The Gentleman's Sport
The sky is a brilliant azure above Meadowood's gabled rooftops and sun-dappled lawns, where players in crisp regulation croquet whites (mandatory attire on the course) move amid the soft clack of wooden mallets and the occasional clink of a glass lifted by those enjoying a respite in the shade. This aristocratic scene recalls summer afternoons on country estates in centuries gone by…until a player suddenly erupts into a cheer and races around the lawn celebrating a tough shot, decorum forgotten.
For many first-time visitors to Meadowood, the term "croquet" evokes memories of whacking weathered wooden balls over bumpy backyard terrain. But that old childhood pastime is nothing like the adult game played at Meadowood. The resort's two championship croquet lawns sport immaculately manicured grass resembling putting greens, where shots roll as smoothly as balls on a billiards table.

Croquet
From LoveToKnow 1911
CROQUET (from Fr. trot, a crook, or crooked stick), a lawn game played with balls, mallets, hoops and two pegs. The game has been evolved, according to some writers, from the paillemaille which was played in Languedoc at least as early as the 13th century. Under the name of le jeu de la crosse or la crosserie, a similar game was at the same period immensely popular in Normandy , and especially at Avranches , but the object appears to have been to send the ball as far as possible by driving it with the mallet (see Sports et jeux d'adresse, 1904, p. 203). Pall Mall , a fashionable game in England in the time of the Stuarts, was played with a ball and a mallet, and with two hoops or a hoop and a peg, the game being won by the player who ran the hoop or hoops and touched the peg under certain conditions in the fewest strokes. Croquet certainly has some resemblance to paille-maille, played with more hoops and more balls. It is said that the game was brought to Ireland from the south of France , and was first played on Lord Lonsdale's lawn in 1852, under the auspices of the eldest daughter of Sir Edmund Macnaghten. It came to
