All Skifields Closed-Hit by Gale-force Winds
As another cold southwesterly front blasted the South Island yesterday, Gale-force winds shut down all the skifields in Queenstown and Wanaka. Throughout the past week, High winds have affected skifields, creating safety issues for the operation of chairlifts. Because of high winds, Cardrona Alpine Resort and Queenstown's Remarkables Ski Area have been closed twice during the week. Treble Cone skifield in Wanaka, which has been unable to operate its Saddle Basin four-seater chairlift since Wednesday, has also been troubled by the ongoing blustery southwesterly winds. Because of the weather, Pisa Range cross-country ski facility Snow Farm also closed yesterday. However, as skifields wind down operations for the last week of the season, the stormy weather has brought significant snowfalls. Cardrona and Snow Park have gained more than 50cm of snow during the past week, while Treble Cone has received more than 80cm of powder snow. Regular falls of between 10cm and 25cm during the past five days was also received at the NZSki Ltd's Queenstown operations at the Remarkables and Coronet Peak to boost their base levels to 195cm and 130cm respectively.

About the Sport
Paintings thought to be at least 6,000 years old, discovered in Russia in the 1930s, show a hunter alongside some reindeer. The hunter is wearing skis, clearly illustrating that using two wooden slats to travel quickly on snow has been central to survival in cold climates for centuries. By the year 1500, the entire Swedish army was fully equipped with skis; the Norwegian army held cross-country ski competitions as early as 1767. The first civilian cross-country ski event took place in Tromso, located in Norway’s far north, in 1843. Cross-country skiers competed at the first Olympic Winter Games in Chamonix, France, in 1924 , in 18-kilometre and 50-kilometre races for men. Ladies’ cross-country skiing made its debut at the Oslo 1952 Olympic Winter Games . The cross-country skiing technique known as skating or free technique, became a separate Olympic competitive discipline at the Calgary 1988 Winter Games How It Works Racers use two basic techniques in cross-country skiing: classic technique, where the skis move parallel to each other through machine-groomed tracks in the snow, and free technique, where skiers propel themselves in a manner similar to speed skating, pushing off with the edge of their skis. Free technique uses shorter skis and is slightly faster than classic — on average about eight per cent faster over an entire race distance.

Fitness Testing Assignment: Cross country Skiing - by Hilde Gjellesvik
        Contents
        Introduction
In Nordic countries, cross-country skiing has for long been a popular sport. Worldwide, over 16 million people regularly participate in the sport. Cross-country skiing is a classic example of an endurance activity (Karlsson 1984). It requires mostly a stong and efficient aerobic system (Morrissey et al 1987). Cross-country skiers use of upper arm musculature in the poling action leads to some of the highest levels of maximum oxygen consumption recorded in athletes (Smith et al 1996).
        Characteristics of Cross-Country Skiers
The cross-country skier is 95-100% dependent on aerobic energy output. Maximal oxygen uptake is widely accepted as a crucial determinant for aerobic endurance capacity, and is commonly used in assessing performance capability in cross country-skiers (Bunc et al 1987, Niinimaa et al 1978). Rusko et al (1978) reported lower maximal oxygen uptake in U.S. cross-country skiers compared to Nordic skiers. Despite that, the U.S. got a silver medal in 1976 Olympics. It is therefore of importance to remember that maximal oxygen uptake is only one of several factors affecting the performance in cross-country skiing. Although normative data is available in the literature, only a few examples will be presented in this assignment.

Few winter sports can match the serenity of cross-country skiing, with an endorphins rush to boot. Strapping on a pair of skinny skis gives you a chance to explore the woods and avoid a winter gut.
    Pick Your Poison
Ski centers offer trails groomed for both traditional striding and the newer skating technique. Striding, also known as “classic skiing,†is easier to pick up and can be taken off-trail, but skating offers more speed.
    Work Every Muscle
No matter what technique you’re using, rely on your whole body—legs, abs, back, chest, and arms—for the most efficient and powerful skiing. If you only feel it in your arms or legs, it’s time for another lesson.
    Push It
Skiing is equal parts propulsion and glide: Focus on getting the most out of every time you push off the snow. As with swimming, slow and smooth technique is always faster than short and choppy. Cross-country skis require a bit more care than downhill ones since you don’t have gravity’s assistance all the time. Maximize your fun and efficiency by using the correct waxes on skis that fit.
