Editorial : Racing towards Irrelevance, 10/14/2010: In another attempt to make the king of sports more "appealing" to television viewers, FIS is in danger of totally bastardizing the sport of cross country ski racing. As reported recently, FIS is considering yet another new format for cross country ski racing: a five k climb uphill; then five k down a "technical" downhill. FIS should stop fiddling with distance race formats and look back towards tradition. At the very least, there should be parity in race formats: e.g., for every mass start event at a given distance, there should be an individual start race of the same distance. Climb to the Castle, 10/8/2010: Hmm.... how should I spin my result: fifth in my age group or third from last? A view from the back of the pack at Whiteface, right here Serial Race Organizer: Rick McNulty and the NJ Trail Series. Road Test: Jenex V930 roller skis, 9/8/2010: When I called Jenex in New Hampshire, they had only XLC series classic rollers in stock. While the design is similar to the regular V930, they feature a high-tech composite shaft and commensurately higher price than the old school aluminum shaft models, which were temporarily out of stock. Shopping around, I ended up purchasing aluminum-shaft V930s, as none of the retailers I checked out carried anything slower. But they came equipped with my desired speed reducers.

Hut-to-Hut Cross-Country Skiing
Backcountry hut, La Sal Mountains Tag-A-Long Huts
Snowcat at one of the La Sal huts Tag-A-Long Expeditions provides three primitive huts along the Nordic ski route. While all of the huts have similar furnishings and equipment, they are not identical. They are comprised of a kitchen/dining area and a sleeping room that is in a bunkhouse-type arrangement. The toilet facilities are wilderness outhouses. The huts are equipped with table and chairs, beds with mattresses or pads, a stove for heat and cooking, gaslights, cooking equipment such as pots, pans and utensils, water, and wood or gas for stoves. Guests must bring their own food, eating utensils, sleeping bags, and personal gear. Tag-A-Long provides a suggested packing list. As an option, the first day of your tour Tag-A-Along will carry your gear and food in a snow cat and meet you at the first hut to go over the operation of the lights, heat and stove. The La Sal Mountain Loop This is a self-guided backcountry adventure that requires maps and compasses to navigate. The La Sal Mountain Loop Road begins only eight miles from Moab, taking you over La Sal Pass and giving you access to Dark Canyon Lake. The ski routes in the La Sal Mountains are ungroomed and unmarked except for the hut-to-hut routes that are packed on a fairly regular basis and marked with blue tipped markers. The skier designs his route from the following segments and huts.

Cross Country Skiing in Northwest Wisconsin
Click to view electronic Guide Northwest Wisconsin is a region rich in Nordic skiing tradition and history and blessed with some of the best cross country ski trails in the country. Not only are there literally hundreds of kilometers of groomed trails, but they represent a wide range of family-oriented to athletically challenging experiences in a setting of incredible natural beauty. With the region's strong Scandinavian heritage, it was only natural that Nordic skiing took root in northwest Wisconsin. Farmers, loggers and settlers of Norwegian, Finnish and Swedish extraction used cross country skis for work and recreation dating back to the early part of the twentieth century. Much of the area's "modern" Nordic skiing heritage can be attributed to the late Tony Wise and the development of Telemark Resort in Cable. Wise was one of those larger than life characters whose accomplishments helped elevate cross country skiing to a much higher level of awareness in the Midwest and perhaps the country. He was the former owner of Telemark Resort which became one of the first downhill ski areas in the Midwest in 1947. As such, it quickly became a hot spot for winter sports in the area. Wise recognized the potential for cross country skiing at Telemark; a system of trails was laid out and Telemark began to make its mark in the world of cross country skiing. To further promote Telemark Resort and its cross country ski trails, Wise also went on to create the American Birkebeiner cross country ski marathon. Starting with only 54 skiers in 1973, it has grown to enormous proportions and now attracts nearly 7,000 skiers. The American Birkebeiner Ski Trail, originally created specifically for this event, has become the most significant cross country ski trail in the United States.

T he Skiing Directory is divided into 2 categories, Cross Country and Downhill. The Cross Country Category focuses on the skiing trails in Yellowstone National Park. The descriptions are written by Carl Schreier, an authority on Yellowstone National Park, from his Hiking Yellowstone Trails. We highly recommend this book since it serves as both a guide for cross country skiing and a hiking companion book. Transportation into the park, during the winter is either by snowcoach or snowmobile. Cross country skiing is a great alternative to seeing the geysers in their winter splendor. The Downhill Category lists the available resorts from the Yellowstone National Park communities. They range from world class to a quiet and relaxed atmosphere all within easy access to the park. We recommend expanding your vacation by downhilling one day and try snowmobiling in the park or riding the rockies the next. Most who have tried it, come back for the same Yellowstone experience each year. Check with the resorts and snowmobile operators for packages and discounts. Shuttles are also available from the resorts to each gateway community around the park.
