Dog racing is a sport run by greyhounds. The dogs chase a mechanical lure, typically an artificial bone, which is called a hare. The hare starts about half a circuit behind the start. When it passes a point near the starting traps, it automatically triggers the gate and releases the dogs. Should the dogs catch or overtake the lure, the race is declared void. Although the dogs are normally docile creatures, they become very excited when they race, and there are times when a runner may turn its head aggressively on another runner. This is why the dogs wear muzzles when they race. The winner of the race is the dog whose nose first reaches the winning line. The position of the feet is not taken into account. Dog racing finishes are photographed. When the result is close, the judge examines the picture before declaring the winner. The most popular dog racing surface today is sand. At one time, grass was the norm as this was both picturesque and fast-running. However, it became too difficult and expensive to maintain in a satisfactory racing condition through the winter.

Should the greyhounds catch or overtake the hare, the race is declared void. In the US, there are about 40 dog racing tracks operating in 12 different states. In England, there are approximately 30 dog racing stadiums In the US, dogracing wagers, like horse racing wagers, are referred to as Pari-Mutuel, meaning "to wager amongst ourselves" in French. American dog racing fans bet against and amongst one another, not against the dog racing track. Wagers, of a particular type, are placed together in a pool; taxes and a house take are removed, and payoff odds are calculated by sharing the pool among all placed bets. In England, dog racing wagers are like sport wagers which have fixed odds. For example, the odds of greyhound #1 finishing first is at 4/1 (read "four-to-one" or "four-to-one against"). If greyhound #1 crosses the finish line first, the bettor makes a £400 profit on a £100 wager. Pari-Mutuel betting differs from fixed odds betting in that the final payout is not determined until betting into the pool is closed. In fixed odds betting, the payout is agreed at the time the bet is placed.

HOME DICTIONARY TRIVIA FAQs ... HISTORY Welcome to Dog-Racing.net DOG RACING HISTORY The greyhound arrived in Europe more than 3,500 years ago. In 1014, King Canute of England enacted the Forest Laws, which stated that only noblemen could own and hunt with greyhounds. In the 1500s, Queen Elizabeth I abolished this law and later initiated the first formal rules of greyhound coursing. Thus, greyhound or dog racing became known as the "Sport of Queens." In the early 1900s, huge crowds would gather to watch greyhound coursing. In the interest of safety, enclosed courses were introduced. These enclosed courses were much smaller than the open courses and speed over agility was of utmost importance. It was just a matter of time before racing would take over from the well established coursing. On July 24, 1926, in front of 1,700 spectators, seven Greyhounds leapt out of the traps at Belle Vue Greyhound Stadium and raced to catch an electric hare. This marked the first ever modern dog race in England. Soon after, dog racing tracks sprung up all over the United Kingdom and dog racing was firmly established in the sporting scene. Meanwhile, In the late 1800's, American farmers imported greyhounds to help curb the multiplying jackrabbit population. Because of the greyhound's speed and natural instincts, they became the focus of popular neighborhood competitions. These informal matches were the first organized dog racing events.
