News Drag bikes, superbikes at BIR this weekend Drag bikes, superbikes at BIR this weekend Drag bikes, Superbikes at BIR this weekend (July 13, 2010) - Drag bikes on the quarter-mile drag strip will be featured Friday-Sunday during BIR's All Bike Weekend, which will include motorcycle drag racing as well as Superbike racing on BIR's Competition Road Course, courtesy of the Central Roadracing Association Fans will be treated to some insane full-throttle racing action all weekend, with a variety of drag bikes competing on the drag strip. Everything from street bikes to Pro Stock bikes that crank out speeds of over 180 mph will be battling. In all, more than 150 bikes are expected. On the 2.5-mile, 13-turn Competition Road Course, the CRA will showcase its brand of Superbike racing, where riders scream around the track on two wheels and a knee. They average speeds over 80 mph during super-competitive racing action. The even will include an all-women's race, in honor of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. You will find that the history of drag bike racing, both legal and the not so legal goes back a long way. Drag bikes have come along way and are sophisticated machines. You can invest a great deal of time and money into a drag bike. Racing drag bikes is a fun profession and hobby. Not everyone will make it to the top of the drag bike competitions around the world but just about everyone will have fun trying. This is a sport or hobby that can take to some interesting places, racing against fanatical competitors. You will find drag bike tracks, again both legal and illegal all over the world. This is a pastime that has captured the hearts of men and some women from many countries, classes and abilities. You will find a great number of enthusiasts at meets all around the world. I know of a group of young men who have traveled all over the United States of America and throughout the United Kingdom with their bikes. They have made it their aim to race at as many drags strips and side roads around the place as they can. These boys are fanatical about the sport and they bring with them an enthusiasm that is hard not to catch. They talk about their sport as being good clean fun with a bit of down and dirty mechanical maintenance and repair thrown in. And as far as I can see they are correct. This is a sport that you can share with your family, it is a safe sport when approached with due care and one that can be down right exciting. Drag bikes are when all is said and done, fun.

Today the popularity of the Supertwin classes, and in the States organisations like the All Harley Drags ensure we see and HEAR these thundering beasts regularly. MY dad was a grass track racer in the 1950's, and his enthusiasm continues, to the extent of pointing out the error of my ways with regard to drag racing! It's no surprise then, that I first encountered Alf Hagon through his amazing career in that sport. Not content with dominating grass track racing, Alf took up sprinting and drag racing in the early 1960's. From '64 to '69 Alf raced the Shorrocks supercharged JAP seen here. In '67 he had become the first British rider in the 10's with a tyre smoking 9.93 and by 1969 had run 9.28 at 157mph. Initially the bike ran a 2 speed Norton gearbox whilst the engine was developed and then went to a single speed countershaft setup. In 1968, using a 3 speed gearbox, Alf had a crack at the UK speed record at Honington air base. Despite a number of problems he became the first British rider to top 200, with a run at 206.54mph.

The atmosphere is completely electric when you are sitting in a crowd of a few hundred people all sheering on their favorite drag team. Music, machines and plenty of action is what can be described as the race way and speed way action of today. There are quite a few teams that travel the world taking their drag cars with them so that they can be recognized on the international stage. A great way to for these crews to get extra money for their expensive choice of motor sport is to use advertising which is basically a marketing tool directly on the car or bikes. The drag bikes are a little small for any major type of advertising however more and more people are coming to see the drag bikes which means that they will certainly get the attention they need. Going to the drag way closest to your home town is a great night out with the family. For something different you should try this type of event to see if the fast bikes and cars are what get your heart pumping. All around the western part of the world there are many tracks for drag racing including some to the ones on salt lakes which are used also as speed trial raceways. The old salt fields that were once giant lakes are flat, smooth and very easy to drive along because of the surface of the lake beds. We not only demonstrated that electrics can be fast and sexy, the tour also brought together EV people from all over NZ. An “EV movement” seems to already have started in NZ in the surge of the tour. Picture: Meremere dragway in Auckland. Most of the day rained away. Even when the rain stopped, the track was too wet to run safely at full power. One of the purposes of the tour was to promote and help the development of the Tumanako open-source motor-controller project. The Tumanako group, based in New Zealand, has built and is just on the edge of production distribution of an open-source 200 kW inverter and drive package. It is awesome and it is about time someone did this. This has potential to be the “Linux” for electric vehicles.
