June is the time of dragon boat races, an event whose origins lie deep in Chinese mythology. During the course of the month, dragon boats will take to waters all over Asia, from Nagasaki to Singapore to Macau. Macau's dragon boat racers compete on the Pearl River, keen competition between crews representing local clubs, schools and work places. Be sure to sit close enough to the water's edge to watch the rowers pulling on their oars, propelling their slender boats towards the finish line. Both ends of the craft are ornately carved and painted to resemble the head of a dragon or another mythological beast. Hidden beneath the spectacle of the regatta is an interesting fable from ancient Chinese mythology. There are many versions of the legend of the dragon boat races, but the one most frequently heard is the tale of Chu Yuan , a faithful and honest servant of a Chinese emperor who reigned four centuries before Christ. Chu Yuan had many fine qualities, but foremost among them was a desire to be a poet, which made him an example of rectitude in an epoch troubled by widespread corruption that extended even as far as the king. Because he was incapable of persuading the king to mend his ways.

The Chinese Dragon Boat Festival The Dragon Boat Festival is a lunar holiday, occurring on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month The Chinese Dragon Boat Festival is a significant holiday celebrated in China, and the one with the longest history. The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated by boat races in the shape of dragons. Competing teams row their boats forward to a drumbeat racing to reach the finish end first.
The boat races during the Dragon Boat Festival are traditional customs to attempts to rescue the patriotic poet Chu Yuan. Chu Yuan drowned on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in 277 B.C. Chinese citizens now throw bamboo leaves filled with cooked rice into the water. Therefore the fish could eat the rice rather than the hero poet. This later on turned into the custom of eating tzungtzu and rice dumplings. The celebration's is a time for protection from evil and disease for the rest of the year. It is done so by different practices such as hanging healthy herbs on the front door, drinking nutritious concoctions, and displaying portraits of evil's nemesis, Chung Kuei. If one manages to stand an egg on it's end at exactly 12:00 noon, the following year will be a lucky one.

Dragon boating isnt something that a lot of people in the United States are familiar with. That is, unless you are of Asian descent. Then you probably know exactly what dragon boating is. A dragon boat is a long, narrow, human powered boat used in the paddling sport of dragon boat racing which originated in China. Many people think that dragon boating was the pre-cursor of the Ivy League rowing teams. For racing events, the boats are usually outfitted with decorative Chinese dragon heads and tails. A large drum is required to be carried on board to keep the oarsmen in time with each other. Dragon boat races are traditional held to commemorate the death of Qu Yuan, a Chinese patriotic poet. Dragon boating is the only sport that is celebrated as a national holiday. The Chinese calendar date is 5/5 which usually corresponds to a date falling sometime in June. The standard crew of a dragon is 22 20 paddlers in pairs facing toward the bow of the boat, 1 drummer or caller at the bow facing toward the paddler, and 1 steersman at the rear of the boat. For races, it is common to have just 18 paddlers. Dragon boats do vary in length and crew size.

Dragon Boat History and Culture
The Roots of Dragon Boat Racing Dragon boats were originated from the Chinese era. To symbolize water, In Asia Dragons were used. Dragon boat racing started before 2000 years in a village in China. The people who were involved in originating the dragon boat event race were the superstitious villagers of China. They celebrated the fifth day of the fifth lunar month of the Chinese calendar, every year. It used to be like a get-together meeting for all the villagers. The Chinese villagers believed that the dragon boat races would please the almighty, the dragon. Their main objective was to reduce the misfortune and increase the rains which were required for prosperity, peace and success. They even believed that the dragons ruled the rivers, oceans and also bossed over the clouds and the rains. To keep this trend going, the dragon boat festival and events are celebrated every year. The dragon boat is around 40 foot long and allows up to 20 paddlers with a drummer behind. The participants splash their oars hard in the water and give out their best efforts for their team. The unity which we find in a dragon boat race team, when they are paddling, can’t be found anywhere else in this entire universe. If you had to imagine the historical dragon boat race events, the scene would be filled with colors, team spirit, loud drum music, cheer shouts from all around. This sport is amazing and so pleasant for the participants and for the viewers as well. No sport ever can get as colorful as the dragon boat race festivals.
