Although training starts with weapons, empty hand techniques, trapping and limb destruction are also core parts of these arts as the weapon is considered merely an extension of the body. Eskrima and Arnis are the most common among the many names often used in the Philippines today to refer to these arts. The teaching of the basic skills in Eskrima are traditionally simplified. With limited time to teach intricate moves, only techniques that were proven effective in battle and could easily be taught en masse were used. This allowed villagers, generally not professional soldiers, a measure of protection against other villages, as well as foreign invaders. This philosophy of simplicity is still used today and is the underlying base of escrima. Because of this approach, escrima and the Filipino martial arts in general are often mistakenly considered to be "simple". However, this refers only to its systematization, not effectiveness. To the contrary, beyond the basic skills lies a very complex structure and a refined skillset that takes years to master.

Escrima Sticks
Escrima sticks are made in many different styles. They can be tradtional skinned or skinless rattan sticks. This is the original fashion. There are also varieties made of very dense and heavy cocobolo wood. Derivitive materials can also be used to make escrima sticks. The very heavy escrima sticks are good for training and real combat. The skinless rattan sticks are good for training combat. The skinned rattan sticks are ideal for stick on stick practice. Filipino Kali is the art of stick fighting. They use hard, bamboo sticks to strike and defend.   Filipino Kali teaches weapons fighting before bare hand to hand combat as they do in other martial art styles.  For example, a student in any Chinese martial arts is expected to master hand to hand combat before moving on to any form of weapons. Definition: martial art specializing in fighting with two baton-length sticks, with techniques adaptable to empty-hand or edged weapons. The terms "escrima" is thought to originate from the Spanish word "escrime", meaning to fence with a swoardand is thought to have orig i nated during the Spanish occupation of the Phillipine Islands. Often used synonomously for arnis and kali

Master Tacosa's Site: CLICK Eskrima is a Pilipino Martial Art which descends down from the late Great Eskrimador Grandmaster Angel Cabales and his Pilipino instructor, the legendary Feliscimo Dizon, Grandmaster of De Cuerdas. One of the Great Grandmaster's top students and Certified Master Instructor is Jimmy Tacosa. It is this direct lineage that Michael Coconis and his father, Dr. Ko descend from. Both son (2nd Level) and father (1st Level) are Certified Instructors of Eskrimador Master Jimmy Tacosa. Few Eskrimadors living in the United States have had the opportunities which Guro and Master Jimmy Tacosa has experienced. By virtue of his Philippine ancestry and of growing up in Stockton, California, he learned from 2 Great Masters. He was taught the Philippine empty hand system of Cadena De Mano by Max Sarmiento and is a first generation instructor. After a 15 year tenure under Grandmaster Angel Cabales, Guro Tacosa was awarded a Masters Diploma and Certificate in Serrada Eskrima and was asked to pass the art onto a new generation. Master Tacosa is recognized as one of the foremost exponents of Serrada Eskrima in the world. Although there are many instructors of the Philippine Martial Arts, Master Tacosa is one of a select group of Qualified and Active Eskrimadors to have trained with the Grandmasters while they were in their prime. Master Tacosa was part of the Grassroots movement for the perpetuation of Philippine Martial Culture in the United States and the World.

EC was once heavily influenced by selected Concepts but it was soon realised that this became confusing and that a COMPLETE SYSTEM needs a Structured Syllabus with theory and strategy to work with various Concepts designed in a logical order that links everything together.

Product Description
Since 1980, when he first read Guru Dan Inosanto’s book, “The Filipino Martial Arts”, our President, Lynn C. Thompson, has diligently studied and trained in these disciplines. Lynn’s extensive sparing experiences, combined with his study and training had an immeasurable impact in shaping Cold Steel into the company it is today. Our brand new Cold Steel Escrima Stick resembles a traditional rattan stick in length, weight, and cross section, it is however, much more durable because it is injection molded from super tough black polypropylene. It measures 32” long and is 1” in diameter and weighs a little over 15 ounces. Unlike rattan, it resists mildew, and won’t dry out, warp, crack splinter or shrink, and with the use of a saw, it can easily be modified to any length. Plus, like our baseball bats, Bokken, and African Walking Stick, it is easy to clean and is so resistant to impact stresses and the elements, that it is virtually unbreakable and practically indestructible. We’re confident that stick fighting enthusiasts and the Filipino Martial Arts Community will want to add one or more of these sticks to their training arsenal.

Escrima
From MartialTalk Online Martial Arts Encyclopedia Project
Full contact tournament gear A collection of training weapons used in an Eskrima class. Includes a padded stick, a rattan stick, a wooden training knife, and a collection of aluminum training knives. Eskrima or Escrima refers to a class of Filipino Martial Arts that emphasize stick and sword fighting. Other terms which have entered into common usage include Kali and Arnis de Mano (harness of the hand); occasionally the abbreviation FMA (Filipino Martial Arts) is used. Eskrima and Arnis are among the many names primarily used in the Philippines today to refer to these arts. The name Kali, although primarily used in the United States and Europe, is seldom used in the Philippines and in most cases is an unknown word. But due to the popularity of the term outside of the Philippines and the influence of foreign practitioners, the term Kali is increasingly being recognized and accepted in the Philippines. Kalis, as used in the Philippines, refers to a sword. It is commonly mistaken as synonymous to or a derivative form of kali (note: postfixing of "s" is not used in Filipino languages or dialects to indicate plurality). However, for all intents and purposes, Eskrima, Arnis, Arnis de Mano, Kali and FMA all refer to the same family of Filipino weapons-based martial arts. The teaching of the basic skills in FMA are traditionally simplified. With limited time to teach flashy and intricate techniques, only skills that were proven effective in battle and could easily be taught en masse were used. This allowed villagers, who were generally not soldiers, a measure of protection against other villages, as well as foreign invaders. This philosophy of simplicity is still used today and is the underlying base of the FMA.
