Escrima Escrima Martial arts systems cannot be developed overnight. The development of a system takes time, testing, and a solid foundation from which to start. Latosa Escrima had undergone over two decades of testing and developing before Rene Latosa would put his name to the system. It involves more than a name on some technique and adding a few extra twirls to make a system. The Latosa Escrima System
The intimidation factor of the name "Combat Escrima" was something the students felt they had to defend. However, just the goal of winning actually proved limiting in the progression of the system and future instructors. PMAS produced excellent fighters and world champions but failed to produce very many well-rounded instructors.
PMAS had the box recipe for producing competent fighters but failed to isolate the individual ingredients that make up the end product. Latosa spent his time developing training methods used to understand the reasoning behind the techniques and isolating the concepts of Escrima.

Please note: Every attempt has been made to reference any claims or factual information. Like many historical articles, there are differing points of view, and in writing, we have ensured if something is stated without evidence, we make it known. We welcome your comments or additions to this history and the introduction of new historical sources. The History of the Philippines is a long one, with records stretching back to as far as 900 AD In the case of the Filipino martial arts, when examining the history of the Philippines as a nation, it is clear that fighting arts have always been an integral part of the Filipino society. The fighting arts of the Philippines, like in many other places, were influenced by many different cultures and migrants. Settled in about 200 B.C by the Malays in a first wave of migrations from the South-east, they brought with them the long knife. Although many weapons of different shapes and sizes were brought into the Philippines, the Kris , a wavy bladed knife from the island of Java, was the first foreign weapon to be transplanted into the Filipino fighting arts . Two more migrations followed , one lasting from the Christian era to the thirteenth century and the second from the beginning of the 14th century until the middle of the fifteenth century. These people were effectively the ancestors of the present day muslim Filipinos of Mindanao and Sulu

Welcome To Escrima Supplies
You'll find various items to be compliment your training with or against weapons. I am a proud to distributor Nok's (AMOK!) work. Rattan sticks are a staple food for Escrima and you'll find them in different sizes here. For those not in a martial art or under someone's instruction, be warned that items found here can cause harm and injury to another person and yourself (use at your own risk). Ill-intent, recklessness, clumsiness, and stupidity are qualities of a person and not of inanimate objects. Take responsibility for your training, partner, lifestyle, actions, and how you treat people around you. Nok's padded knives are as strong as a metal practice knife and without the metal-to-bone risk. Larger padded knives have more mass to them and therefore have more force. So expect harder shots with them. Check out the Talons and Peregrines. They are unique, brilliant, and a must have (both come with trainers).

Kali/Escrima/Arnis
Intro:
Kali, Escrima, and Arnis are all terms for the native fighting arts of the Philippines, specifically the arts that use weapons. Arnis is a Northern Term, Escrima more Central, and Kali is from the South. In this view, the terms just refer to indigenous weapons fighting systems. Arnis would be the term used in Northern Luzon, Escrima from Manila through the central islands, and Kali on Mindanao. People who use this definition tend to say that the words don't matter - every village, and often every master, has a distinct style, and that's what the important thing is - "do you study Illustrisimo, Caballero, or Cabales style?" Not "do you study escrima or kali?"
Origin:
Phillipines.
History:
Kali is an older art than Escrima or Arnis, and more comprehensive. Escrima and Arnis were developed as streamlined, simplified ways to teach people to fight the Spanish invaders. Hence, Kali is more of a "warrior's art" while Escrima and Arnis are "soldier's arts". Kali is usually considered to have 12 areas of combat, with Escrima containing 8 or 9 of them, and Arnis 4 to 6.
Description:
The "full" coverage alluded to above usually contains the following:
