Becoming A Falconer

Falconry / Hawking Info Falconry is an art. It requires long hours, constant devotion, finesse, subtlety and skill. The falconer must train a bird of prey to fly free, hunt for a human being and then accept a return to captivity. "Falconry is not a hobby; it’s a lifestyle," according to Ted Benzon, administrator for the falconry program for South Dakota’s Game Fish & Parks Department. Falconers must devote time to their birds each and every day, 365 days a year. It is not for everyone. It is not a suitable pastime for children. In addition, it takes a thick skin. Animal-rights activists and some environmentalists condemn falconers; some hunters claim falcons interfere with "their" hunting; and many falconers have lost a bird to inept or ill-intentioned hunters. A fledgling falconer should begin with knowledge. The beginner must learn about the various gaming birds, their stages of life, characteristics, prey, care, feeding and suitability for the falconer and the hunting environment. Some medical knowledge is a must, too, because a falconer must be able to recognize and treat health problems. That’s not all. Don’t forget learning about proper housing for the birds, and knowing how to use the equipment. Another factor to keep in mind: a falconer must know the rules and regulations that affect the sport and the laws that apply to birds of prey.

Falconry...
The art of flying trained birds of prey after wild quarry is alive and well in the United States. Imagine the thrill of walking through a field with a falcon “waiting on” flying above your head at 1,000 feet or higherwaiting for you to flush a pheasant you know is there because your well trained pointers have indicated so. The falcon is in the proper position, you flush the game, the falcon turns and begins its head first dive or stoop, your adrenaline is rushing, The next thing you know the falcon hits the pheasant in the air, binds to it, then carries it to the ground where she will patiently await her reward. Picture yourself walking through a field hitting every piece of brush, trying to flush out rabbits. Your Harris Hawk is following you from tree to tree, waiting and anticipating the flushing of game. Suddenly a rabbit breaks from the brush, the hawk quickly takes off, and turns to chase the rabbit in aggressive pursuit. Eventually the rabbit out maneuvers the hawk, he turns in mid-air and returns to your glove for a small reward. This is Falconry...

Falconry - Modern and Traditional
by Lydia Ash
In order to actually become a falconer, every falconer has had to find a way to get a bird. This was often accomplished by either trapping a bird or by taking a downy chick from the nest. The traps that were set up then are largely still the same ones used today and carry such exotic names as bal-chatri and dho-gazza . Most simply contained bait of a bird or mammal, and then a system of nooses to ensnare the bird's feet or a way to wrap around the bird and contain her until the trapper could gain control of the bird. Some of the materials are better, fishing line has replaced horsehair, cable ties are used where leather might have been, but the functions are identical. The equipment of falconry is relatively minimal when compared to many other sports. A simple perch for the bird and a mechanism to attach the bird to the perch are two necessities. The same perch designs have been in use for centuries. The two basic designs are bow perches for hawks and block perches for falcons. The bow perch originated from simple branches bent over to create a bow shape, or even the hunter's bow stuck into the ground. The block perch is a stylized platform for the falcons to stand on. These are still made out of carved and turned wood, but may be made of plastics for an inexpensive and long-lasting piece.

Training raptors (birds of prey) is a complex undertaking. Books containing hundreds of pages of information and advice by experienced falconers are still rudimentary at best. Many important details vary between individual raptors, species of raptors and between places and times. Unfortunately, without mentoring by an experienced falconer, raptors may be illegally taken and kept, and can be harmed by uneducated pseudo-falconers. Rather than attempt to train a raptor using only internet resources and books, it is wise to find experienced falconers and volunteer or apprentice with them.
